The Dominican Republic is a country located on the island of Hispaniola, the second largest of the Antilles after Cuba, located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second largest island after Cuba.

It shares territory with Haiti, with two-thirds of the island corresponding to the Dominican Republic. The pre-Columbian name for the island is Quisqueya: Mother of the Lands, which is still used today and refers to several places on the island.

The Dominican Republic is internationally recognized for its beautiful beaches. But the country is more than that. It is home to impressive waterfalls and cascades that leave even the most indifferent in awe of its natural beauty. Some of these attractions are little known.

Juan Luis Guerra

Juan Luis Guerra is a Dominican singer-songwriter who has won multiple Grammy Awards and has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. One of the most internationally recognized Latin artists of recent decades, he is credited with popularizing bachata music worldwide. However, his music is not limited to bachata, as it also incorporates diverse rhythms such as merengue, salsa, rock and roll, and even gospel.

He was born on June 7, 1957, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was the youngest of three children of Olga Seijas Herrero and Gilberto Guerra Pacheco, a basketball player. From a young age, he became interested in music, especially musicians such as Joselito, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Rafael Hernández, Benny Moré, Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, Facundo Cabral, and even Spanish zarzuela.

In June 1977, he performed his first concert, titled “Dos.” He later obtained a scholarship to study music and moved to the United States, attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied composition and musical arrangements, graduating in 1982 with a diploma in jazz composition.

After returning to the Dominican Republic, he released his first album, Soplando (1984), with a group that would later become known as Juan Luis Guerra y los 440, composed of members such as Maridalia Hernández, Roger Zayas-Bazán, and Mariela Mercado. This first album was based on jazz melodies, but he later shifted his style toward merengue. In 2004, he converted to evangelical Christianity and shifted his career to composing more spiritual songs.

In 2012, he released a single, “En el cielo no hay hospital,” from his new album Colección Cristiana, featuring songs with religious content. He has won a total of 18 Grammys, 3 from the American Academy of Music.

In January 2010, Juan Luis Guerra joined a group of Dominican personalities in the telethon “Long Live the Country for Haiti,” led by Dominican presenter Jatnna Tavárez. On April 18 of that year, Juan Luis Guerra organized a benefit concert, “A Song of Hope for Haiti,” to build a children’s hospital in Haiti. The concert was a huge success, and the venue was transformed into a giant discotheque with the rhythms of merengue, bachata, pop, and rock. Guerra was the first to appear on stage with his merengues “La Travesía,” “A pedir su mano,” and “Las avispas,” although he eventually returned with three more songs: “Como yo,” “Bachata en Fukuoka,” and “El farolito.” Forty thousand people attended this concert, which also featured performances by Laura Pausini, Sin Bandera, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Luis Fonsi, Juanes, Enrique Iglesias, and other artists. For the grand finale, the stars took the stage and sang the classic “Ojalá que llueva café,” composed by Guerra, holding the Dominican and Haitian flags intertwined in their hands.
