Family Ties Build Foundation for Detroit Cristo Rey Boys Soccer

Los lazos familiares construyen los cimientos del equipo de fútbol masculino de Detroit Cristo Rey

Alejandro, el hijo de Eloy Garita, le conto a su padre a finales de julio del año pasado, que la temporada de fútbol en su preparatoria  en  Michigan estaba en peligro.

“’Oye, papá. No creo que vayamos a jugar esta temporada…’No tenemos entrenador’”, recuerda Eloy que le comento su hijo, entonces estudiante de tercer año en Detroit Cristo Rey.

Eloy respondió: “No te preocupes. Estaré ahí para ustedes”.

Eloy había sido entrenador de fútbol de secundaria durante cuatro años en la Academia de las Américas, a 5 minutos de la avenida Junction, en el suroeste de Detroit.

 En su primera temporada como entrenador de Cristo Rey, Eloy ayudó al equipo a hacer historia en la escuela, guiando a los Wolves a su mejor récord (14-1-1) y asegurando el primer puesto en su división, tras quedar penúltimos en la División 4 tras la temporada 2023-24.

Cristo Rey también ganó su primer título de la Liga Católica, derrotando a Royal Oak Shrine en octubre.

Tras perder solo a cuatro estudiantes de último año, el equipo de este año busca seguir creciendo a partir de su éxito.

Garita sobre su padre: “Me dice que motive a mis compañeros”.

Tres años después del cierre de la  Secundaria Holy Redeemer en 2005, Detroit Cristo Rey tomó su lugar. La escuela presentó su equipo universitario de fútbol en 2010. El equipo tuvo su primera temporada ganadora en 2015, según la MHSAA.

Desde la llegada de Garita, sus prioridades han sido el acondicionamiento físico, el control del balón y el liderazgo, según comentaron sus jugadores.  “Nos hacía correr mucho”, dijo Hugo Romero, estudiante de último año y uno de los tres capitanes del equipo. “Siento que eso fue lo que realmente nos motivó”.

Alejandro Garita, también capitán del equipo, habla con su padre sobre cómo podría ser un mejor líder para el equipo.

“Me dice que motive a mis compañeros”, dijo. “Tengo que ser el primero en llegar… Tengo que ser el primero en hacer las cosas y decirles a todos que sigan el ritmo, o si alguien se retrasa, entonces tengo que ser el primero en ayudarlo”.

El mayor de los Garita dijo que su objetivo general es fortalecer la mentalidad del equipo.

“Son todos”, dijo. “Los chicos pueden hacer lo que quieran, si trabajan juntos y dan lo mejor de sí”.

Construyendo para el futuro

A pesar de la exitosa temporada 2024 del equipo, Garita no se arrepiente.  “No intentamos presionar a este equipo porque, obviamente, este es diferente al de la temporada pasada”, dijo. “Así que este es un equipo nuevo, una temporada nueva. La temporada pasada. Se acabó, es cosa del pasado. Esta temporada es para este equipo”.

El fútbol americano puede ser el deporte predilecto del otoño, pero el fútbol es omnipresente en el suroeste de Detroit.

“Domingos, sábados y viernes, siempre hay partidos en todos los parques”, dijo el entrenador asistente de Cristo Rey, Javier Franco.

Diego Vargas, estudiante de segundo año y capitán del equipo, dijo que el fútbol es una forma de vida para él.

“Con una escuela tan pequeña compitiendo en partidos tan importantes, ojalá podamos estar en el mapa y decir que Cristo Rey lo logró”. Cristo Rey mira hacia el futuro y quiere construir un programa de fútbol de éxito constante.  “Nuestro objetivo esta temporada no es demostrar una vez más que podemos hacer otra temporada histórica, sino demostrarles a todos que esta no es una oportunidad de un solo año, sino que será múltiple”, dijo Franco. “Solo puedo decir que no vamos a luchar una sola vez; estamos aquí para jugar, estamos aquí para demostrar corazón”.

Ha sido un proceso de aprendizaje para Garita pasar de ser entrenador de secundaria a preparatoria. Pero conocía a algunos miembros del equipo, lo que, según él, facilitó un poco la transición.

Se siente honrado de poder entrenar a los jugadores.

“Creo que es Dios quien me puso aquí”, dijo. “Es lo único que puedo decir. Gracias  Dios”.
