Detroit’s local professional sports teams, universities and community organizations have ramped up their observances of Hispanic Heritage Month with ceremonies, displays of cultural images and celebrations of Latin American culture.

Last week we highlighted the special tributes to Hispanic Heritage Month by the Detroit Lions with their Plaza de los Leones. This past weekend The Detroit Tigers and Detroit City FC got into the game with tips of the cap to the many Latinos who play such important roles in supporting their clubs on and off the field.

The Tigers wrapped up their last regular season homestand against the Atlanta Braves by honoring the contributions of Latino players and coaches to the game of baseball with the 20th annual ¡Fiesta Tigres! Celebration on Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20.

Comerica Park was decorated with banners saluting current Latino Tigers players and flags representing the home countries of all MLB players of Latin American descent. Fans were greeted outside the gates along Witherell St by an array of sparkling Lowrider cars displayed by their proud owners. Once inside the park, fans enjoyed music on the concourse that celebrates Latin American culture. Taqueria El Rey’s Mexican fare was available for sale and fans could visit the “313 Taco” locations around the park.

The Tigers honored former pitcher Aníbal Sánchez throughout the ¡Fiesta Tigres! celebration.

Sánchez, a native of Maracay, Venezuela, spent six seasons in Detroit from 2012-2017, helping the Tigers advance to the World Series in 2012, as he pitched in three straight postseasons.

In Friday’s pre-game ceremony, the Tigers’ honored Tarik Skubal as their nominee for the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to an MLB player who best embodies baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement and philanthropy.

The final Saturday giveaway for fans was a “Vamos Tigres” Rope Hat. To make it even more special, a small group of lucky fans received hats autographed by Tigers players of Hispanic heritage. ¡Fiesta Tigres! Saturday festivities included dancers from Ballet Folklorico groups, flags representing the Latin American countries and recognition of all current Latin Tigers players and coaching staff. Local Latin singer Caleb Gutierrez sang the National Anthem and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

As a special visual treat, local Hispanic artist Freddy Diaz, who is the final featured artist in the 2025 Tigers Design Series, created a live mural design depicting ¡Fiesta Tigres! on the Comerica Park concourse throughout the game. Digitized copies of the mural design will be printed and given to 200 lucky fans at random.
