The Mexicantown Mercado played host to one of the most unique stadium announcements Detroit has ever seen. For the first time ever, a soccer specific stadium will be built in the city. Detroit City Football Club will be moving to its third location since 2012, its “Forever Home.” For decades, Detroiters referred to The Corner, representing the corner of Michigan Avenue and Trumbull where the Detroit Tigers played. AlumniFi Field will give the area that links Corktown and Mexicantown a point of reference: Michigan and 20th.

Detroit City FC began life as a group of friends who entered amateur competitions and hosted games at Cass Tech, fondly known to CEO Sean Mann as the “Estadio CassTecha.” In 2015, the team moved to Hamtramck and vowed to rescue dilapidated Keyworth Stadium. The club put a lot of money into Keyworth, making it worthy of having games shown on ESPN and CBS, while hoping to grow big enough to have a home they could call their own.

When the newly christened AlumniFi Field opens in 2027, it will be the home of the club’s dreams. At a cost of roughly $150 million, the new stadium is expected to have a capacity of 15,000. Sean Mann has assured supporters that certain elements of Keyworth will remain, especially having the supporters along the touchline, central to the play, part of the action, and in the television picture that captures the atmosphere at a DCFC game. He also pointed out that “This will be the only privately financed stadium in Detroit and the only one that will pay property taxes.” That brought a roar of approval from the assembled crowd.

Being part of the community has been something CEO Mann and Chief Creative Officer Alex Wright have stressed at every occasion. Paying one’s property taxes contributes directly to that. However, as the several invited speakers emphasized, “community” has been a major part of the club’s ethos since it was founded.

Bianca Cuevas, a Community Leader, said, “This is more than a soccer club. This is not just a sports venue (AlumniFi Field). It’s a community center.” Khary K. Turner, Executive Director of the Coleman A. Young Foundation and parent of a DCFC youth player, cited the “color and vibrancy” DCFC adds to the city, noting that the club itself looks like the people of the city.

District 6 City Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero noted that she used to play in the kids leagues that have sprouted in Southwest Detroit. She looks forward to the linking of Corktown and Mexicantown, pointing out that the people in Mexicantown will be thrilled to have a venue in walking distance that welcomes their culture and heritage of supporting soccer.

Perhaps the most passionate speech came from current club captain Stephen Carroll. Carroll is the longest currently serving team captain in Detroit sports. He arrived from Cork, Ireland in 2017 knowing very little about Detroit and has put down roots in the city. He told the crowd that he hopes to lead the team out for the first home game in the new stadium and that he wishes his one year old son will grow up here and get to play in the stadium, as well. Carroll has truly embraced the club and the city since moving to Detroit.

DCFC fans take a look at the newly unveiled renderings of Alumni Fi Stadium.

For Mann and Wright, the new stadium will give them the opportunity to walk to work. Mann regularly reminds people that he has lived near the stadium site for over twenty years. They have established what Mann calls “an aggressive timeline” to have the venue open for the start of the 2027 season. Right now, workers are pumping over a million gallons of water out of the condemned Southwest Detroit Hospital building on the stadium site. Once that finishes, the club can initiate demolition followed by the start of construction. The venue will include a parking garage, outward facing retail, and a number of residential units. It’s going to be a massive project for the area and will ideally provide jobs to local residents in addition to more business for local vendors.

AlumniFi Field will take Detroit City FC into the future not only as a club, but also as a pillar of the community. Every speaker noted the public events the club stages, including with men and women players, coaches, and staff. The team has built up tremendous goodwill. All the attendees at the Mercado–players, coaches, front office, supporters, marching band, and members of the press–could feel that. This new project could have the biggest impact of anything seen in the Corktown-Mexicantown area in decades and have a multi-generational effect on the area.

DCFC fans take a look at the newly unveiled renderings of Alumni Fi Stadium.
