Painter Julianna Sanromán Rojas is on a roll. Just two weeks after the end of her exhibition as the Jack O. Summers Featured Artist at Detroit Artists Market, and a day after the closing of a group show she was in at the Mexicantown CDC, she was awarded second place in the new exhibit at Detroit Artists Market that opened last week.
And she also has artwork at the Bas Blue restaurant in a collaboration between Detroit Artists Market and Wasserman Projects. That exhibit will be up through the end of the month, closing almost the same day as the current show at Detroit Artists Market. Bas Blue is not far from Detroit Artists Market.
The current show at Detroit Artists Market was juried by Professor Gil Ashby from the College for Creative Studies (CCS). Ashby considered several sculptures, photographs and paintings for the exhibit.
Of those he chose for the exhibit, he further awarded Sanromán second place for an oil on canvas triptych spanning 94 inches by 40 inches. Mostly red in hue, the three panels show three women, pensive, in a very evocative composition.
Ashby awarded first place to Joyce Brienza for a mixed media collage and third place to Mandisa Smith for textile artwork.
Although Sanromán is not an alumna of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, she was the Jack O. Summers Featured Artist for the duration of the Cranbrook scholarship show at Detroit Artists Market that closed a couple of weeks ago.
Sanromán is in fact a CCS graduate, she earned her Bachelors of Fine Art there and her Masters of Fine Art at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Like some of the Cranbrook students she exhibited with, she has also been a recipient of awards during her own time as an art student. Her paintings intermingle precision and fuzziness, perhaps to evoke the vividness of some memories.
Detroit Artists Market is located on Woodward Avenue, very close to the Wayne State University campus. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In other art news, Andrew Pequeño has a solo show that opened at Louis Buhl last week. The Texas native uses the color blue in his paintings a lot more than Sanromán, and he generally goes for a mildly surreal effect. But his paintings do show, like Sanromán’s, a touch of deliberate imprecision.
