On July 3, 2025, the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners elected and swore in new officers for the fiscal year as required by the City Charter. From now through June 30, 2026, Police Commissioner Eva Garza Dewaelsche will serve as Chair of the Board.
Chair Garza Dewaelsche already was serving a historic third time as Police Commissioner and had held leadership roles when the Board had five members and after the 2012 Charter expanded it to 11 members. She served as Vice Chair in 2001 and Chair in 2002 during her appointment by Mayor Dennis Archer. She is in her second appointment by Mayor Duggan and served as Board Vice Chair from 2017-18.

Eva Garza Dewaelsche is the president and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit Jobs for Progress and is the owner and publisher of EL CENTRAL Hispanic News.
For the following year, the former chair, Police Commissioner Darryl Woods will serve as Vice Chair.
Under the 2012 City Charter, seven Police Commissioners are elected by district and the mayor appoints four with City Council approval. There is currently one appointed vacancy.

Created by the 1974 City Charter, the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners has supervisory authority and oversight over the Police Department. The Board of Police Commissioners meets weekly on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters except for the second Thursday when the BOPC holds a monthly community meeting at 6:30 p.m. at various locations.
