9th Annual Event kicks off with luncheon and ends with fireworks.

On its surface, the Detroit Tiger’s annual recognition of Latino players focuses on the contributions and heroics of the Major League players who have played for the Tigers in days gone by up through the 12 players on today’s roster of 26 team members. But the celebrations have come to mean so much more to the Latino players and the Latino and Hispanic community that cheers for the Tigers win or lose.

This year’s festivities began with a luncheon in the Tiger Club at Comerica Park on Friday, August 19th attended by more than 150 invited guests from the Detroit Latino community. The luncheon program honored 1984 Tiger World Series Champion Bárbaro Garbey. Garbey was a key member of the Tigers World Series Championship Team playing in 110 games that season and hitting 287.

Entertainment for luncheon guests was provided by Sean Blackman’s In Transit – Latino Trio. This year’s Fiesta Tigres game vs the California Angels was played later that same evening and made history as the first Tiger baseball game to be broadcast live in Spanish for radio listeners. The game was broadcast on local Radio Explosiva WSDS AM with Carlos Guillen doing the play-by-play and Mari Montes as color analyst.

The pre-game ceremonies were a highlight of Latino cultural experiences, leading off with the display of the national flags of current Detroit Tiger Latino players including Cuba, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Curaçao.

Three Detroit-area folkloric dance groups entertained the crowd of more than 28,000 with ethnic dance performances wearing traditional, colorful dresses from Mexico, including Raices Mexicanas de Detroit, Balet Folklorico Detroit and Moyocoyanilzel.

Southwest Detroit vocalist Caleb Gutierrez sang a spirited rendition of the National Anthem to the delight of the local crowd.

Luncheon honoree Bárbaro Garbey threw out the ceremonial first pitch and the game was on! Tiger pitcher Matt Manning threw a strong game for the first five innings and gave up one run – a homerun in the second inning. Unfortunately, that one run by the Angels stood up as the only run of the game by either team and the Tigers lost the first game of the weekend series 1-0 to the Angels.

The fans who stayed til the end of the game were treated to an exciting Friday night fireworks display put on by the Tigers with the downtown skyline as a backdrop. The ooohs and ahaaas of the remaining fans summed up the local Latino community’s appreciation to the Tigers for their tribute to their Latino players and fans.
