The rosca de reyes, an icon of Mexican and Latin American traditions, is part of the festival celebrated today, January 6.

But where did it all begin? With Herod and with the wise men. Well, in principle, with the birth of Jesus.

It is said that on January 6, José and María received the visit of some wise men or magicians who came, from the East, who were later called the Magi. These sages had the revelation that the Messiah, the King of the Jews, had been born in Bethlehem of Judea, and they came with Gold, Myrrh and Incense to worship him.

The wise men of the East, came from different latitudes following the Star of Bethlehem, which indicated where they could find the newborn. For this, it is important to recognize that the kings were instructed in astronomy and astrology, maps and the understanding of the space-time relationship.

Upon reaching Bethlehem, the kings began searching from house to house for the newborn, asking if anyone knew where the King of the Jews was born. Herod was the one who reigned in Bethlehem of Judea, and when it reached the ears of him that some wise men were looking for the king of the Jews who had just been born. This awakened in Herod a deep sense of the threat to his kingdom. For this reason, he immediately sends an army to look for the newborn king of the Jews, an undertaking that he carried out without success, as no one gave him reason. Herod, enraged by it, makes a more radical decision by sending to kill all the children in Bethlehem under 2 years of age.

This reached the ears of Mary and Joseph, who hid Jesus and fled from Bethlehem, heading for Egypt.

Its origin as a piece of bread dates back to the Middle Ages in Spain, which is how it came to us.

Within Catholicism, different reinterpretations of the symbols and meanings of this culinary tradition have been carried out, among which the following are mentioned:

The Rosca by itself represents the crown of the King of the Jews, as well as the infinite love of God without beginning or end,

The crystallized dried fruits that adorn the bread, symbolize the gifts that the kings brought for Jesus. It’s easy to place the symbol of jewelry, gold, myrrh and incense upon these fruits.

The hidden child is Jesus who had to be hidden by his parents to save him from Herod’s hands as they fugitives to Egypt.

And yes, we could say that with this the Rosca de Reyes began, therefore, by splitting the thread we are looking to worship Jesus, the newborn King of the Jews.
