Welcome to Detroit Abdi Salim! Officially, DCFC had yet to announce the arrival of the powerfully built defender from Orlando City of MLS, but he stepped straight into the starting eleven for last Saturday’s friendly against UNAM Pumas of Liga MX and right into the hearts of the Northern Guard with the winning goal.

It had been five years, that’s pre-COVID, since DCFC had brought in an opponent from abroad for a friendly game at Keyworth. Previous visitors have include Jaguares and Atlas from Mexico, as well as St. Pauli from Germany and FC United of Manchester from England. Pumas accepted their invitation to the Motor City and took advantage of the surroundings to do a meet and greet with fans last Friday.

Hot and steamy conditions greeted the two teams in Hamtramck Saturday night. Fans were well advised to hydrate before, during, and after the game to beat the heat. Because the game was treated more like a preseason friendly, which for Pumas it was, both coaches took the opportunity to substitute freely. DCFC in particular gave debuts to three academy players in addition to the newly arrived Salim. There was also a return to action for academy product Dominic Gasso in midfield.

Nate Steinwascher stepped into the starting lineup for the first time since conceding three goals in Monterrey last month. He was tested throughout the game and came good every time. Pumas put him under pressure as early as the seventh minute, when a sharp double save kept the visitors off the board. Le Rouge responded a few minutes later when Daniel Espeleta hit the post following a corner. The teams continued to trade chances in an open game, entertaining more than 7,000 spectators crammed into Keyworth. Pumas brought the largest contingent of away fans Keyworth has seen in some time, adding to the party atmosphere.

Salim struck just eight minutes into the second half when Ryan Williams’ free kick swerved over the Pumas back line and found him unmarked. The new hero celebrated his first DCFC goal with a spectacular back flip that brought another roar from the crowd and waves of multi-colored smoke from the East Stand.

During the second half DCFC manager introduced three teenagers from the academy: Louis Sala of DCFC II, DCFC Academy’s Bennett Quijand, and DCFC West’s Khaled Jamoukha, a sixteen year old. The youngsters helped Le Rouge hold on for their second ever win over a Liga MX team. They defeated Atlas previously. Summer weather, a packed house, a debut goal, and teenagers coming on to show that the club has a path for young players to succeed made this game an overwhelming success for the club.

Pumas will move on to continue their preseason preparations ahead of the Apertura’s first game on July 7. DCFC has little time to bask in the glow of Saturday’s win. They step into the national television spotlight this week against Birmingham Legion, a Wednesday night game on CBS Sports Network, before traveling to Miami on Saturday to face the current worst team in the USL Championship

DCFC Women Take Down Kalamazoo

Prior to the men’s team taking on Pumas, the first place DCFC Women met their nearest pursuers going into the day’s action, Kalamazoo FC. Early arriving fans got to see the Great Lakes Division leaders continue their unbeaten season with a 2-0 win. The result leaves DCFC five points clear of Midwest United with two games left in the regular season. DCFC will play Midwest United on Thursday night in Grand Rapids, needing only a point to clinch first place and their first ever playoff berth.

Two first half goals gave the home team an insurmountable lead. Acadia Murphy picked out Kayla Addison in the eleventh minute with a long pass that stretched the field. Addison finished coolly for her third goal in the last three games. Tatiana Mason doubled the lead in the thirtieth minute with a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area. DCFC dominated long portions of the first half, but couldn’t increase their lead.

During the second half, goalkeeper Gabby Shriver and the crossbar helped preserve the shutout. The ladies have only given up five goals in the first ten games of the season. Tight defense and a ruthless attack have seen David Dwaihy’s team to a comfortable lead atop the Great Lakes Division of the USL W League. Of the eighty teams across the country in the W League, only sixteen will advance to the post-season. DCFC’s women haven’t qualified before, but could even host a game. The playoff picture will be more clear next week, once the regular season ends.
