Another NFL Draft has come and gone, but this year it leaves our town with a high bar to surpass for future host sites. Detroit has done itself proud by rolling out the red carpet along with the state of the art high tech stage, security and fun and interesting things to do for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who came to our city from near and far. Even the weather cooperated, mas o menos!

When the three-day event was in the history books, Detroit convinced a lot of doubters, perhaps more than anyone, ourselves, that not only could we pull off hosting the largest single event in the city’s history, but we could do it by organizing and promoting the event at a par with the best of the best.

On Thursday, April 25, the national programming was kicked off by local celebrity Eminem and by the end of the evening, Detroit had set the record for highest single day attendance with more than 275,000 people streaming into the downtown footprint. Two days later, by Saturday afternoon, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that Detroit had set the total attendance record for an NFL Draft with 700,000 people and climbing. The NFL later said the final count surpassed 775,000.

Attendance records are nice, but even greater is the sense that we were one community – people from Detroit neighborhoods and suburbs to communities across the state of Michigan. Local businesses were engaged in hosting the massive event from serving up our delicious ethnic foods to booming Motown sounds and coordinating seamless logistics.

And, we can’t overlook the fact that despite not having high draft picks this year, the Detroit Lions pulled off some magic of their own with some masterful trades and picks that raise our hopes for even greater glory next season!

Well done Detroit! Let’s do it again sometime soon!

¡Bien hecho Detroit! ¡Hagámoslo otra vez!
