“Reclaiming our legacy means honoring the history of resilience, creativity, and ingenuity that Latinx communities have always embodied,” says Jimena Gutierrez, Program coordinator at Techtown.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, TechTown will be hosting a Latinx centered event focused on uplifting Latinx innovators, business owners, and entrepreneurs.
The event is called Latin-X-Tech and has turned into an annual eagerly-awaited celebration at Techtown. The event is a free community centered event highlighting the stories of Latinx innovators and entrepreneurs of Detroit. Attendees can expect to engage in intimate conversations and network with local inspiring leaders, and participate in interactive learning workshops.
Techtown, as a non-profit, is dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs and fostering innovation in and across Detroit. Creating and leading this event is a natural extension of that mission and demonstrating what inclusive entrepreneurship and innovation can look like.
“We recognize the talent, creativity, and vision within the Latinx community, and we want to uplift those voices, create opportunities for connection, and help build bridges that drive equity in business and tech,” Gutierrez said.
There will be a difference from last year’s event, which was held at New Lab next to Michigan Central.
First, this year you will be able to shop local at the event and connect with local Latinx businesses that are buzzing within Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
In addition, Sergio Rodenzuela is the spotlight speaker. Rodenzuela is the founder and CEO of Tansy, which helps small and mid-sized businesses with AI powered health care to support patients and their families by keeping up with their health hassle-free. Patrons can expect to learn and hear his story navigating his entrepreneurial career.
A big challenge Latinx entrepreneurs face in Detroit is access whether that be funding or mentors, or event access to networking opportunities. For Jimena, her heritage reminds her to lead with community, through Latin-X-tech TechTown is, “Making sure Latinx founders are not just building great things but being recognized as leaders in the larger ecosystem” she says.
Latin-X-Tech will be an “in person” event hosted by TechTown Detroit, 440 Burroughs St., Detroit, MI 48202 on Monday, October 6 from 4:30 to 7:30pm. For more information, visit https://techtown.zohobackstage.com/Latin-X-Tech1#/?affl=Social
