Music from the Local and Global Stage

Week 10-16-25

Local

DARK SHADES – Art.Carter

Saba flow & Mac Miller soul over
a somber guitar and crisp drums, Art. Carter’s lyrics flex with honesty on a mellow but moving beat built for bars that balance grind and grace.

THINK ABOUT IT – Paco

English and Spanish verses trade off in a confession that glides on an atmospher- ic, groovy bassline. It’s like dancing on a treadmill built by Sade and Daft Punk.

Local

THESE THINGS – Thibault Ruellan

This track on the local producer’s newest album dropped just last week. It’s a double-time banger with syrupy vocal samples, rapid-fire trunk-rattling 808s, and a chant-like flow that glides hypnotically over the beat.

Eres Para Mi – Sinfónico En Vivo – Julieta Venegas

This live version recorded in Tijuana feels like a love letter with a symphonic hug—playful, radiant, and elevated by the sweep of a full orchestra.

Week 10-16-25 - Nicole Macdonald

Nicole Macdonald

his mural honors the women behind Thumbprint Fulfillment, a small business in Southwest owned
by mother and daughter. Painted in tribute to Connie Reid, her mother Cecilia Mendez-Reid, and Connie’s newborn daughter, it celebrates three generations of strength, heritage, and care rooted in the heart of the community.

Week 10-02-25 - Freddy Diaz

Freddy Diaz

“SWFreddy”s striking depiction of La Bestia – the noto- rious train migrants ride from Central America through Mexico to reach the U.S. border – once stretched across the former Garaje Cultural at Otis & Livernois. Though the mural has since been bricked over by Al Capone Liquor, its spirit survives as a haunting reminder of the journeys people risk for a better life.

One dish, one spot, puro sabor

Strozzapretti alla Norccina
Desert Garden Margarita
Strozzapretti alla Norccina

Twisted ribbons of pasta coated in a silky toma- to-truffle cream, with Montovana sausage that’s juicy, wine-kissed, and laced with nutmeg. Comfort food with class.

  • Restaurant: EL BARZON
  • Price: $25 to $30

Desert Garden Margarita

A smoky twist on the margarita—tequila and mezcal shaken with sweet orange bell pepper syrup, a sprinkle of Japanese chili spice, and a fresh kick of cilantro. Bold, earthy, and super refreshing.

Intensa, terrosa y bien refrescante.

Same Walls, New Story
Flour Power on Bagley
Same Walls, New Story

Before it was Flamingo Vintage, this building held another kind of beauty. In this archival photo, a family poses proudly among flowers and polished floors—the same space decades before Nikki Neuzil restored its bones and brought it back to life. A glimpse of what once was, and what still endures.

Flour Power on Bagley

Gutierrez Family Archives

This restored photo captures a La Michoacana tortilla truck parked outside the very building that still houses its Bagley flour facility. Founded in the early 1940s, La Michoacana made history as Michigan’s first tortilla shop—and remains the state’s oldest and longest-running to this day.
