The Detroit City Council Historic Designation Advisory Board (HDAB) recently announced that the Bagley-West Vernor Historic District is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places!

The district spans much of the commercial core of the city’s popular Mexicantown neighborhood and includes many of the well-known eateries and other landmarks along these two streets. The National Register is America’s official list of places worthy of preservation.

The district is significant in the areas of Hispanic Ethnic Heritage, Social History, and Commerce, and includes contributing resources dating from 1920-1975. Property owners will now be able to take advantage of historic preservation tax credits as they rehabilitate their buildings!

This listing is a part of the Latinx History Project and a product of over three years of work. In addition to the National Register listing, this project also produced a historic context study that dives into the rich history different Latinx communities have contributed to Detroit for over a century.

Listing in the National Register of Historic Place is honorific, meaning there is no formal protection of the buildings against demolition. However, as noted above, National Register status opens the possibility of historic tax credits (state and federal) for property owners on eligible rehabilitations! This listing is also a formal recognition of this history and its importance to Detroit!

The project team extends a huge thank you to the many members of the community who contributed and supported the project including the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office, District 6 Councilmember Gabriela Santiago-Romero, Mexicantown Community Development Corporation, Voces: Southwest Detroit History and the countless others who turned out and showed up for the life of this project!

This work was supported in part by an Underrepresented Communities Grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior.
