The Virgin of Guadalupe is one of the most well-known advocations of the Virgin Mary in the Ibero-American world.

The official day of the festivities for the Virgin of Guadalupe is December 12 of each year when the parishioners demonstrate their faith and gratitude with pilgrimages and pre-Hispanic dances. The festivities begin 12 when thousands of pilgrims begin to set up with music and different forms of gratitude for the favors received. Some people offer flowers, mandas, kneeling in the atrium of the basilica up to the entrance doors. At midnight the musicians begin with the mariachi mañanitas for the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The history of the presence of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico dates back to the times of Spanish colonization.

In the text Nican Mopohua, which in Nahuatl means: “Here is narrated,” is where the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the Chichimeco Indian, Cuauhtlatoatzin, are narrated. Upon receiving the sacrament of Catholic baptism, he took the name of Juan Diego.

It was a Saturday at the beginning of December in the year 1531. The young Chichimeca heard the chirping of birds with delightful songs.

Suddenly, the birds fell silent and he heard someone calling him: “Juanito, Juan Dieguito.” Upon hearing his name, Juan Diego approached and found a woman in the middle of a garden with flowers, who was the one who had called him. When Juan Diego approached her, he could see the golden glow that surrounded that woman of perfect grandeur who was wearing a dress that shone like the sun. She was standing on a cliff and the glow that emanated from her made the mesquites, nopales and other small herbs that usually grow there look like emeralds.

The lady turned to Juan Diego saying: “Listen, my youngest son, Juanito. Where are you going?”

Juan Diego replied that he was going to church to serve the church’s mandates.

The Virgin, upon hearing him, said: “Know, be certain, my youngest son, that I am the perfect ever Virgin Saint Mary, mother of the true God for whom we live, the creator of people, the owner of nearness and immensity, the owner of heaven and earth. And I, your mother, very much desire that my sacred little house be built here, from where I will show myself giving people all my personal love, in my compassionate gaze, in my help, in my salvation, because I am truly your compassionate mother. My lovers, those who cry out to me, those who seek me, those who trust in me, I will listen to their crying, their sadness, to remedy, to cure all their different pains, their miseries, their sorrows. Go, my son Juan Dieguito, to the palace of the bishop of Mexico and tell him how I am sending you, because I very much desire that a house be provided for me here, that my temple be built on the plain. And be assured that I will be very grateful and I will repay it. You have already heard, my youngest son, my encouragement, my word; go, do what is in your power.”

And immediately in her presence Juan Diego prostrated himself; he said to her: “My lady, Niña, I am going to carry out your venerable encouragement, your venerable word; for now I will depart from you, I, your poor Indian.”

Then Juan Diego came down to carry out his commission, straight to Mexico. Upon arriving inside the city, he went to the bishop’s palace to whom he revealed the Virgin’s request. However, the bishop did not believe him and asked him to bring proof to support the apparition he was describing.

Juan Diego, saddened by the bishop’s distrust, returned home.

The following days, although the most convenient route was up the hill, Juan Diego, ashamed of not having been able to carry out the Virgin’s command, tried to avoid passing by the same place where she had appeared to him, but the Virgin of Guadalupe wanted a place of worship to be built there on the Tepeyac hill and for Juan Diego to be her messenger.

So, although Juan Diego went around the hill, the Virgin appeared to him again and again until she gave him the proof to take to the bishop. She told

Juan Diego to gather those roses in his huipil and that when he reached the bishop, he should show him and remind him of the Virgin’s will.

Juan Diego fulfilled the mandate, went to the bishop and showed him the huipil where the miraculous image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was located.

¿A dónde te diriges?”.
