Eva Garza Dewaelsche, President and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit, was honored as a Distinguished Warrior by the Urban League of Detroit and Southeast Michigan at the organization’s annual dinner at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center last Thursday, March 14.
The Urban League’s Distinguished Warrior Award celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions in our community’s human rights and civil rights arena over their careers. Awardees are selected for their vision, courage, dedication, sacrifices and commitment to service.
In accepting her award, Garza Dewaelsche gave thanks to her family including her husband, Robert and daughters Lisa and Christina who traveled from out of town to be at the dinner and close friend, Sandy. She also singled out her brother Ruben and her parents Lilia and Archie Garza who instilled in her the importance of hard work, volunteerism, being involved and giving back to the community.
“I’m incredibly thankful to work at SER Metro-Detroit for the past 40 years with some of the most amazing people ever. This award is a reflection of our remarkable team who dedicate their time, talents and passion to provide employment and education programs that make a positive impact on our community and our city,” she said.
Also honored as Distinguished Warriors at the dinner were Chuck Stokes, WXYZ-TV 7 Editorial Director; Rev. DeeDee Coleman, Pastor and Former President of the Council of Baptist Pastors; Dr. Isaiah “Ike” McKinnon, Professor and former Police Chief and Deputy Mayor, and Rev.
