EL CENTRAL Hispanic News and WDET 101.9 FM are proud to announce the launch of an innovative news service called Voz Latina. The one-hour radio program features the broadcast of articles and features from EL CENTRAL’s weekly newspaper and online posts for the benefit of Spanish-speaking listeners in the Metro Detroit area and an even wider audience online at www.WDET/DRIS.

WDET’s Detroit Radio Information Service (DRIS) is Southeast Michigan’s Radio/Audio Information Service for people with low vision and visual disabilities or those who cannot physically hold reading materials. It is a special audience service of WDET 101.9 FM Detroit Public Radio and Wayne State University. This week they joined in a partnership with EL CENTRAL Hispanic News to read its newspaper in Spanish every week.

The service is free to individuals and families via streaming services by engaging local volunteer readers offering verbatim readings of more than 100 local and national newspapers and magazines per week. Special interest content offered by Voz Latina will include timely information about special events, community profiles and public service announcements. The partnership with EL CENTRAL represents WDET’s first outreach to ethnic populations in our area through their native language.

The first live broadcast aired this past Monday, November 25, featuring our first three volunteer readers Rita Aceves, Raquel Figueroa and Dolores Fraga. Additional Spanish-speaking volunteers are needed to expand the program to other days of the week. For questions about volunteering, please contact EL CENTRAL Managing Editor Robert Dewaelsche at 313-580-0672 or info@elcentralmedia.com.

Voz Latina airs on Mondays from 12noon to 1pm on WDET 101.9 FM.
