More than 3,000 people waited for over four hours last Saturday to hear the former president speak at Renaissance High School in Detroit. He spoke for nearly one hour and, as expected, energized the crowd to get out and vote for Democratic candidates in Michigan. He repeatedly asked, “Who will fight for you?” and the crowd shouted back “Governor Whitmer and Democrats!” He said, “Democrats have actual plans.” Obama touted the major accomplishments of the Biden administration noting that Democrats have passed a major infrastructure plan, reduced costs of prescription drugs and protected health care. “And, we should all agree that women everywhere should be able to control what happens with their own bodies!” He reiterated that a lot was a stake in this election.

“Democracy is at stake” he said, “and we must elect Democrats running for office up and down the ballot if we want to save our democracy!”

Obama urged the audience to “get out and vote for Whitmer and Gilchrist and all of the Michigan candidates who will fight for you.” When he was heckled a couple of times towards the end of his speech, and the crowd began to boo, he repeated his famous line “Don’t be distracted….don’t boo…they can’t hear your boo. Vote! They can hear your vote!” The crowd cheered long and loud. He ended his remarks by encouraging everyone to make sure that they get their families, friends and colleagues to the polls on November 8th.
