The weather was perfect and so was the upbeat mood of the thousands of people who enjoyed the 61st Cinco de Mayo Parade in Southwest Detroit on Sunday, May 3rd. Sponsored by the Mexican Patriotic Committee, the parade and fiesta, which was held on both Saturday and Sunday, went off flawlessly (at least to most viewers!) The festivities, in all their glory, were a testament to the resilience of a people who have seen troubled times over the past year, but who remain proud of their history and their rich culture.

The theme for this year’s festivities was Estamos Unidos (We Are United), and the concept boldly symbolized an inclusive and welcoming attitude which celebrates the diversity of Southwest Detroit. The community gladly came out and stood up for the diverse American and immigrant cultures that make our community the rich cultural home for proud residents, local businesses and service providers.

The Mexican Patriotic Committee estimates that approximately 8,000 people lined up along the 2.4 mile parade route on W Vernor Hwy, from Patton Park to Clark Park. Alma Cruz, president of the Comite, reported that the parade attracted 99 registered participants (from local businesses, schools, folkloric dance groups, nonprofits and civic leaders) – a 35 percent increase over last year’s participants. In addition, the 2026 parade had 130 registered vehicles – up from last year’s total, as well.

This year, the parade was led by Grand Marshal Jesse Gonzales, Sr., who was accompanied by the vibrant sounds of the Harper Woods High School Marching Band.

The Fiesta was held on the grounds of Patton Recreation Center near the start of the parade and attracted approximately 500 people over the two days. There, attendees enjoyed scrumptious treats served by food truck vendors, along with several commercial vendors marketing their ethnic foods and products and resource tables sharing important information with attendees. Fiesta entertainment was provided by Grupo Ekilibriow, Grupo Reti, Grupo Autonomo and Grupo Primazos.

“For many years, the Mexican Patriotic Committee has poured its heart into this Parade, guided by a deep love for our culture and our people,” Cruz said. “It fills us with joy to see our community line the streets, gathering freely and proudly in a space where they feel safe to celebrate who they are. We will keep doing this work — for our heritage, for our community, and for every generation still to come.”
