Recently, Frank Venegas, Jr. and Ideal Group became involved with Michigan Humane to help support Southwest Detroit families and their pets. “Our goal is to teach the residents in Southwest about Michigan Humane and help bring resources to the community. Some residents will feed their pet before themselves and we want to help bridge the gap for our neighbors. Our goal is to create a program that other communities can replicate,” said Venegas.
Founded in 1877, Michigan Humane rescues and cares for animals in need, while working to keep families together with their beloved pet. Michigan Humane distributes pet food in Southwest Detroit to families with pets working alongside partner organizations like LA SED, Holy Redeemer, Detroit Cristo Rey, Cadillac Urban Gardens, Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest. The Southwest Detroit program provides low-cost veterinary care in the community at its vaccine clinics.
Following the example set by The Ideal Group, Michigan Humane has become a corporate work study program partner at Detroit Cristo Rey, welcoming eight students to learn more about careers in veterinary medicine, community development, fundraising and non-profit organizations.
“Pets are important, and they make our lives better. They are key parts of our family and our community. Frank Venegas has been a great partner because he knows this,” said Matt Pepper, Michigan Humane President & CEO. “Together, we will support more than 4,500 families this year with essential pet food, critical veterinary care, and career pathways.”
In 2024, Kemeny Recreation Center and LA SED Senior Center have hosted vaccine clinics. Three additional vaccine clinics are scheduled in Southwest Detroit:
- Saturday, July 20 from 9am to 2pm at Scarcyny Park with Cadillac Urban Gardens at Junction and Merritt,
- Friday, August 16 from 10:30am to 3:30pm at Detroit Cristo Rey, and
- Saturday, September 7 from 11am to 4pm at Clark Park
Families with pets may call Michigan Humane for an appointment at 866-HUMANE or visit events to access veterinary care and food for their pets.
Special thanks to Frank Venegas and Ideal Group as a vibrant pillar in our community – helping to improve our quality of life for people and pets!
