The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) hosted its 2024 Community Investment Breakfast, presented by Bank of America, on Thursday, September 19 at The Corner Ballpark in Corktown. This year’s breakfast brought together more than 200 business and community leaders to spotlight innovative strategies for preserving the rich cultural heritage of Southwest Detroit while fostering sustainable economic growth.
The breakfast commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month featured a panel discussion and an awards presentation to honor individuals and organizations driving positive change in Southwest Detroit.
Jason Colthorp, WDIV-TV 4’s anchor and reporter, served as master of ceremonies for the breakfast themed – Southwest: Protect, Preserve, Promote. The panel with Deputy Mayor of Detroit Todd Bettison and Senior Vice President and Market Executive of Business Banking at Bank of America John McManus explored Southwest Detroit’s vital role in the city’s economy, emphasizing its unique culture and community voice.
The SDBA honored local business and community leaders who have made significant contributions to the vibrancy and growth of Southwest Detroit with the following awards:
- Community Investment Award – Gabriel Gutierrez, Owner of Donut Villa, was honored for his dedication to entrepreneurship and community advancement in Southwest Detroit, recognizing significant contributions to economic growth and local development.
- Southwest Champion Award – Rico Razo, Chief of Home Repair & Neighborhood Services for the City of Detroit, received this award for his tireless efforts to advocate for and uplift the Southwest Detroit community, improving quality of life and creating opportunities for residents.
Real Estate Development Award – La Joya Gardens was recognized for its transformative impact in the community by offering a blend of market-rate and affordable housing units as well as available retail spaces. Construction is scheduled to be completed before the end of this calendar year. Representatives from Cinnaire Solutions and the SDBA accepted the award.
