Tigers Clinch Playoffs!

The Detroit Tigers clinched a playoff berth for the first time in a decade by beating the Chicago White Sox 4-1 last Friday in the first game of a regular season ending weekend series. The win secured a wild card spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2014 and set off a joyous celebration on and off the field for both players and fans.

In the two months leading up to their clinching the playoff spot, the Tigers have been the hottest team in baseball going on a winning streak of 31 – 13 since August 10. The Tigers and the Houston Astros kicked off their three-game wild card series at Houston’s Minute Maid Park this past Tuesday as this edition of EL CENTRAL went to press. Making things even more interesting in this short series, Tigers Manager A.J. Hinch managed the Astros for five seasons and led the Astros to a World Series Championship in 2017.

Not to be outdone, two other Detroit teams racked up wins this past week. The Detroit Lions beat the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football 42-29 (for the first time in six meetings between the two teams) to improve to 3-1 in the young season. And, Detroit City FC beat Monterey Bay FC last Saturday. With the win, DCFC leaped into 3rd place in their Eastern Conference giving them a five-point cushion over the cutline for a home playoff match.
