Residents and visitors to Southwest Detroit looking for fun things to do had a wide variety of activities to choose from across the community on a perfect summer day in the city last weekend.

First, on Saturday, August 27th, SWFest returned to the Senate Theater on Michigan Avenue for a second year to the delight of festival-goers. The event attracted 2,000 visitors who were treated to an eclectic assortment of entertainment on three stages inside and around the theater. Nearly 100 vendors were joined by agencies and groups advocating for various people’s causes and food trucks offered a range of edible delights from traditional Latin American to Ethiopian fare. See photo story on page 2.

On the same afternoon, Clark Park was the site of a unique event to help support Gun Violence Awareness called “Dance with a Cop – Rumba at the Park”. The event was sponsored by the 4th and 2nd precincts of the Detroit Police Department and the Hispanic Police Officers Association. Entertainment featured Live DJ playing Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and more, Latin food for sale, ice cream and a live Bomba performance. See the photo story on page 9.

To wrap up the weekend, nearly 600 people returned to Clark Park on Sunday, August 28th for the seventh annual COPA Motor City Soccer Tournament combined with the Summer Arts and Freedom Fest. See page 8 for the photo story.
