The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is making history. For the 2024–2025 season, they hired Enrico Lopez-Yañez, producer, composer, and arranger, as Principal Pops Conductor, who brings his Mexican culture and history into the symphonic world.

“Enrico’s vibrancy, charisma, and creativity will invigorate our orchestra and be a tremendous asset,” said DSO President and CEO Erik Rönmark.

The position comes after years of national and international success, including collaborations with leading Mexican artists like Aida Cuevas and Lila Downs.

Lopez-Yañez has come a long way since his childhood days of listening to his father, a renowned operatic tenor, and his mother, a pianist, rehearse daily. His music-filled life included touring with his father in Europe as well as summers and Christmas vacations visiting family in Aguas Calientes, Mexico, which instilled in him a devotion to Mexican music.

“I would get to play with mariachi groups with my dad and work and absorb the music and culture,” Lopez Yañez said.

When Enrico was a young man, his father, Jorge López Yáñez— part of the Three Mexican Tenors—wanted to express his love of la musica ranchera, and record a mariachi album. The album included songs such as Novillero, Pelea de Gallos, and Silverio, which are part of the mariachi music canon.

The recordings spread out over a week, and it was during these sessions that Enrico fell in love with the trumpet.

“Mariachi music was one of the reasons I decided I wanted to be a trumpet player, Lopez Yañez said. “Being there and seeing that sound live in the studio come to life was one of the things where I was like, wow, this is something I could see myself doing.”

When Lopez Yañez started learning the trumpet, his grandfather, a bullfighter, dreamed that one day his grandson would learn the piece, La Virgen de la Macarena, a pasodoble used at the beginning of bullfights and made famous by the Mexican trumpet virtuoso Rafael Méndez.

Sadly, his grandfather passed away before he learned to command the trumpet enough to play such a tune. Later, as an homage to his abuelo, he played La Virgen de La Macarena as his final high school graduation performance.

“I used La Virgen de La Macarena for several competitions that got me scholarships for college,” Lopez Yañez said. “It came full circle for me. I have a cousin who is a professional bullfighter—and that music is very much a part of our family’s culture in Mexico. And that kind of repertoire is very special to me.”

After a decades-long music trajectory, which includes receiving the “Mexicanos Distinguidos” Award—a prestigious award given by the Mexican government that recognizes citizens abroad for their extraordinary commitment to promoting the image of Mexico—López-Yañes is back in Detroit.

He was first introduced to Detroit audiences in 2019 and has since conducted the DSO in more than twenty performances.

The DSO says that it is his dynamic artistic leadership that brings unforgettable musical moments to the audiences in Orchestra Hall and throughout Detroit. Through the DSO’s Detroit Neighborhood Initiative, he conducted a musical experience at St. Hedwig Catholic Church in 2022 and again in 2023, featuring works by Latin American composers and a performance by local Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Izel.

One of the main reasons López-Yañes says he came to Detroit is because he believes in the ethos of the DSO.

I feel like the Detroit Symphony is one of the few orchestras in the country that really commits to the mission of being an orchestra for the city and the community,” said Lopez-Yañez. “I’m incredibly excited to be here in Detroit.”

This story was made possible by the Race and Justice Reporting Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to build trust between the news media and Black Indigenous People of Color communities and strengthen representative democracy.
