There’s high demand for workers to fill green transportation jobs right now, driven largely by the growing demand for EVs.

Detroit native Q Johnson knew electric vehicles were the future when he left Ford in 2006. He’s now an entrepreneur in green transportation, having founded PlugZen, an EV charging company. Johnson is passionate about the environmental impact of his work and sees the potential for growth in green transportation careers.

For those interested in pursuing a career in green transportation, there are numerous training and entry-level job opportunities in Metro Detroit and beyond, offering significant potential for advancement. This Planet Detroit Climate Guide will explore common questions about this growing field.

What is a green transportation job?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics defines green jobs broadly, encompassing various fields. Glenn Stevens, executive director of MICHauto, includes any sustainable transportation that reduces carbon emissions or is net zero, from traditional vehicles to walking.

“We think it’s any form of sustainable transportation that is either reducing carbon emissions or is net zero, all the way down to walking,” said Glenn Stevens, executive director of auto industry advocacy organization MICHauto. “[That includes]traditional vehicles, but we’re working right now with off-road recreational vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and then you get to motorcycles and electric bikes and bikes and walking. They’re all green transportation forms.”

One of the fastest-growing subsets of green transportation jobs involves manufacturing and powering electric vehicles (EVs), including hybrid and battery-powered passenger, commercial, and public transit vehicles.

In Detroit, major employers are repositioning themselves as green transportation employers focusing on EVs. Companies like GM, Ford, and Stellantis have set ambitious sustainability goals, and they now see themselves as tech companies due to the increasing digitalization and sustainability of their vehicles.

What is the outlook for green transportation jobs?

Demand for green transportation jobs is high, driven by the growing demand for EVs. A Goldman Sachs Research forecast anticipates EVs will account for half of all new car sales worldwide by 2035. In 2021, clean transportation jobs in Michigan grew by 22%, far faster than the state’s overall clean energy job growth rate.

Federal and state policies such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Michigan’s MI Healthy Climate Plan also drive sector expansion. Stevens highlights the “Wild Wild West” of talent opportunities as automakers rapidly hire for electrification and alternative energy propulsion.

Stevens said it’s “absolutely the Wild Wild West when it comes to talent opportunities,” noting that automakers are “all in an absolute arms race, for lack of a better term, regarding electrification and other forms of alternative energy propulsion.”

“They can’t hire people strategically fast enough in those areas,” Stevens said.

One challenge is the rapidly developing technology, creating undefined job opportunities. However, the outlook for green transportation jobs over the next five to 10 years remains very good.

How can I get started in a green transportation career?

Various training options are available for green transportation careers, including low-cost or free programs. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administrationgranted $10 million to the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance for transportation-related training programs. The resulting Building an Industry Infinity Supply Chain program offers reimbursement for training, from certification programs to associate’s degrees.

Michigan has invested $12 million in the Michigan Electric Vehicle Jobs Academy, which offers tuition assistance for EV-related jobs. Michigan Works! agencies can help identify training and funding opportunities.

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is often a prerequisite for many transportation jobs. Electricians are also in high demand in green transportation, and apprenticeship programs provide opportunities to “earn as they learn.”

College education offers many paths into green transportation careers. The state’s Michigan Reconnect programoffers free tuition at participating community colleges for those seeking anassociate’s degree, and many employers will pay for employeesto pursue higher-level degrees.

If you’re considering a college education for a green transportation career, here are some of the automotive-related programs available in Metro Detroit.

  • CAAT at MCC offers the Vehicle Engineering Technician and the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Automotive Manufacturing Program, both associate’s degree programs.
  • MCC also offers an associate’s degree in automotive technology, a bachelor’s in automotive management through Ferris State University, and certificate programs inspecializations, including engines and alternative fuels. Learn more about MCC’s automotive programs here.
  • Washtenaw Community College offers various certificate and degree programs in advanced manufacturing and automotive technology. The college’s Advanced Transportation Center also works directly with local employers and automotive researchers to tailor its offerings to industry needs.
  • Henry Ford College offers several certificate and degree programs in automotive technology.
  • The University of Detroit Mercy offers graduate programs in advanced electric vehicles, vehicle cyber engineering, and smart and autonomous vehicles.
  • Lawrence Technological University offers a graduate program in automotive engineering. It’s also home to the Automotive Engineering Institute, an “applied research and academic organization focused on creating new knowledge in the field of automotive engineering.”
  • The University of Michigan offers a graduate program in automotive engineering.
  • Wayne State University offers a graduate program in electric-drive vehicle engineering, the first in the nation when it launched in 2010.

What green transportation jobs are available right now?

A wide variety of jobs are available in Michigan’s transportation industry, including architectural and engineering managers, transportation and distribution managers, civil engineers, compliance officers, and supervisors of transportation workers.

With the auto industry’s shift towards technology, transportation employers also play a significant role in other sectors.

The state’s top transportation employers include Michigan, Ryder, Home Depot, General Motors, and GPAC. Job opportunities in the EV industry range from scientific research, design and development, manufacturing, EV maintenance, and infrastructure development to sales and support. For more information on specific jobs, salaries, and pathways, check out these career profiles from the EV Jobs Academy.

What options are available for starting my own green transportation business?

In green transportation, businesses have diverse needs beyond designing or building EVs and chargers. For example, there’s a need for well-designed curricula to train new workers. If you have an idea for a green transportation business, various resources can help you get started:

  1. Michigan Mobility Funding Platform offers grants to mobility and electrification companies.
  2. Plug and Play, a Silicon Valley-based incubator, focuses on mobility and energy.
  3. Michigan Small Business Development Center provides free classes, programs, and services for new business owners.
  4. Michigan’s SmartZones offer resources for tech businesses, including incubator services and networking opportunities.
  5. Michigan Founders Fund provides networking and educational opportunities with entrepreneurs and investors.
  6. Community college classes are a great resource for learning about running a business or taking non-credit continuing education courses.
