Entrevista a Mary Sheffield en su campaña electoral para alcaldesa de Detroit

Si es elegida alcaldesa, la presidenta del Concejo de Detroit, Mary Sheffield, quiere reducir los impuestos a la propiedad de los residentes y al mismo tiempo aboga por un nuevo impuesto al entretenimiento.

  •  Todavía es prematuro en las elecciones para poder reemplazar al alcalde Mike Duggan, quien lleva tres mandatos. La carrera no partidista tiene sus primarias en agosto y las elecciones generales en noviembre.

Historia: Sheffield, creció en el lado oeste, es hija del pastor y activista Reverendo Horace Sheffield III y nieta del líder de los derechos civiles Horace Sheffield Jr.

  • En 2013, a los 26 años, fue la más joven elegida como miembro del Concejo Municipal de Detroit y se convirtió en la presidenta del concejo más joven en 2022.

  • A continuación, construir la clase media, viviendas asequibles y generar riqueza.   • “Una cosa es promocionar los empleos y decir que los habitantes de Detroit tienen empleo, pero queremos empleo de calidad que permita a las personas mantener a sus familias”.
  • Para compensar en parte la reducción de los impuestos a la propiedad, pretende aumentar los impuestos a los hoteles y crear un impuesto al entretenimiento para los eventos del centro con entradas.
  • Sheffield también señaló que las viviendas designadas como “asequibles” a menudo siguen siendo demasiado caras y que la ciudad necesita incentivar a los desarrolladores que construyen unidades destinadas a los ingresos más bajos.
  • En el ámbito de la seguridad pública, “Soy muy partidaria de los programas de intervención en casos de violencia comunitaria y posiblemente de la creación de una oficina de prevención de la violencia con armas de fuego en Detroit. Crear más formas de abordar los problemas sociales subyacentes que generan delincuencia en nuestra comunidad”.

A medida que se agotan los fondos federales de rescate de Detroit por el COVID-19 (deben gastarse antes de fines de 2026), el Concejo y el alcalde analizarán qué programas continuar y cómo priorizar el presupuesto.

  • Sheffield se muestra optimista sobre la posibilidad de conseguir otros fondos, ya sean estatales, federales o filantrópicos.
  • En referencia a la administración Trump, dijo: “Sigo siendo optimista y estoy dispuesta y lista para trabajar con quien esté en el cargo para beneficiar a los habitantes de Detroit. Tiene que haber algún punto en común que beneficie a Detroit”.

Un gran tema de la campaña para alcalde será las grandes empresas y la comunidad: equilibrar los diversos intereses y necesidades de quienes afectan y se ven afectados por el panorama aún en evolución de Detroit después de la recesión. 

  • De acuerdo con Sheffield: “Se trata de comunicación. Se trata de entender que las empresas necesitan a la comunidad y la comunidad necesita a las empresas. Y cuando hay transparencia, cuando hay respeto mutuo, honestidad en estas discusiones, para mí siempre resultaron mucho más productivas. Por eso es importante tener a alguien que lidere la ciudad y que tenga una perspectiva sana y equilibrada tanto para las empresas como para la comunidad… Creo que todos queremos el crecimiento continuo de Detroit… No tenemos que trabajar de forma cuadrada”.

En resumen: Cuando se le preguntó sobre una cualidad que aporta y que la hace única entre los demás candidatos, Sheffield dijo:

  • “Creo que aporto equilibrio en el respeto mutuo por parte de la comunidad y soy capaz de tender un puente entre las empresas y la comunidad. Creo que estoy en una posición única para poder hacerlo. Ser capaz de construir puentes, alguien que pueda unir a ambos, es extremadamente importante a medida que avanzamos en Detroit”.
