Trump Dice que México Solo es Bueno para “Tamales y Tomates.” Los Datos Comerciales Dicen Lo Contrario

El Presidente estadounidense Donald Trump reiteró el viernes, 4 de septiembre, que México “no tiene nada” que Estados Unidos necesita — aparte de “tamales calientes” y “tomates” — y por lo tanto Estados Unidos podría dejar de comerciar con su vecino del sur.

Sin embargo, Trump dijo que no quería terminar el comercio con México — un país que envió más de $60 mil millones en exportaciones a Estados Unidos solo en julio — “porque nos llevamos muy bien” con la Presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sus comentarios de la Oficina Oval vinieron solo horas después de que amenazara en una publicación en redes sociales “DEJAR DE COMERCIAR CON PAÍSES CON LOS CUALES TENEMOS UN DÉFICIT,” entre los cuales está México, si la Reserva Federal estadounidense no baja su tasa de interés de referencia, que actualmente está establecida en 3.50%-3.75%.

“La Junta de la Fed, con su gran nuevo líder Kevin Warsh, debe ser inteligente — SER PATRIOTAS por una vez. Las tasas de interés altas ponen a Estados Unidos en una desventaja muy injusta, ¡y no permitiré que eso suceda!” escribió Trump en Truth Social antes de la próxima decisión de tasa de interés de la Fed el 16 de septiembre.

Más tarde el viernes, el presidente estadounidense le dijo a los reporteros que “podríamos hacer un bien tremendo para nosotros mismos simplemente no comerciando con países.”

“Perdemos con la Unión Europea $200 mil millones al año. Si no comerciara con ellos, no perderíamos nada — solo un golpe de pluma,” dijo Trump.

“Perdemos con México $195 mil millones al año,” dijo, refiriéndose al déficit comercial de Estados Unidos con su vecino del sur en 2025.

“… No tienen nada que tengamos que tener — quiero decir tamales calientes, tomates, un par de cosas,” dijo Trump.

“Pero básicamente no tienen nada que necesitemos. Tenemos petróleo, tenemos todo,” dijo, añadiendo que no quería terminar el comercio con México “porque nos llevamos muy bien con la presidenta.”

“Nos gusta la presidenta, la respetamos mucho, pero si no quisiéramos comerciar con México, si no quisiéramos comerciar con Canadá, ahorraríamos de $60 mil millones a $90 mil millones al año, solo por no comerciar con Canadá,” dijo Trump.

El presidente estadounidense ha aseverado previamente que Estados Unidos no necesita nada de México y Canadá, sus dos socios comerciales más grandes.

“Con México y Canadá tenemos déficits comerciales. Deberíamos tener superávits con ellos. No necesitamos sus autos, no necesitamos su madera, no necesitamos su energía, no necesitamos nada de lo que tienen,” dijo Trump el 10 de junio, el mismo día que declaró que no estaba buscando renovar el pacto de libre comercio USMCA.

Tres semanas después, Estados Unidos anunció que había declinado renovar el acuerdo trilateral en su “forma actual,” un movimiento que allanó el camino para revisiones anuales del USMCA, que permanece en vigor.

La aseveración de Trump de que México “no tiene nada” que Estados Unidos necesita choca con la realidad de que las economías estadounidense y mexicana están altamente integradas y que México envía enormes cantidades de bienes a su vecino del norte diariamente. Entre las exportaciones de México a Estados Unidos están vehículos, autopartes, maquinaria, dispositivos médicos, servidores de IA, bebidas alcohólicas y alimentos frescos, incluyendo tomates.

En julio solo, México exportó bienes valorados en $60.55 mil millones a Estados Unidos, de acuerdo al U.S. Census Bureau y el U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Las exportaciones de México a Estados Unidos en los primeros siete meses de 2026 fueron valoradas en $358.7 mil millones, un aumento de 16 por ciento comparado con el mismo período del año pasado.
