Last Friday, October 3, community members gathered at the Lincoln Manor Banquet Hall in Lincoln Park for the 7th Annual Talentos Latinos Awards, a celebration recognizing leaders in the Hispanic community across Michigan.

Organized by the Minority Education Freedom Foundation and Latinos En Michigan TV, the empowering event was fittingly held during Hispanic Heritage Month. Energy poured out of the main room doors, hearing the live performance by Rosalina Molares and seeing everyone dressed in their best, leading attendees to anticipate what was to come. The room quickly filled with a sense of community poised to enjoy a celebration but to also recognize the importance and impact of Michigan’s Latino community. Guests mingled in light conversation surrounding the photo booth prior to the decorated tables being endowed with authentic cuisine:  chicken, Barbacoa, rice, and more!

The night started off with a national anthem performance by Sebastian Duque, a versatile musician who combines technology and artistry, as well as a prayer from Kevin Casillas, Pastor of First Latin America Baptist Church. Lilianna Ospina and John Herbstreith, co-founders of Latinos En Michigan TV, welcomed the audience and the night officially began. The program honored 13 individuals whose work has had a meaningful impact across the state, while including lively performances all evening. Performances included: Flamenco, Reflejos Latinos Ballet, Interlude by Adel Ruelas, Joyas de México, Juan Castañeda & Ana M. Boada, Kenya Cruz, and the energetic DJ Williams.

The following individuals were honored for their accomplishments:

  • María Marín – Latina Legacy Award
  • Sairy García – Latina Community Leader
  • Marian Esnoval – Michigan Latina Entrepreneur
  • Kenya Cruz – Latino Musical Talent
  • Mario Alberto Martínez Méndez – Latino Activist Artist
  • Cecilia Jaime Gutiérrez – Latina Education Leader
  • Marco Márquez – Latino Volunteer
  • Daphne Navarro – The Latinos que Inspiran Award
  • Alejandra Walters – The Michigan Latina Realtor
  • Sister Marie Benzing – Amiga de los Latinos Award
  • Attorney Elizabeth Rosario – Latino Altruism
  • Mayté Penman – Latina Business Ambassador
  • Jesús Grillo – Latino Media Personality

Special award honorees included Jesús Grillo, co-founder of the only Spanish-language newspaper in Southwest Michigan New/Nueva Opinión, who was honored as Latino Media Personality; and Cecilia Jaime Gutiérrez, awarded Latina Education Leader for her role in expanding educational access and helping improve health and quality of life within the Latino community.

Throughout the evening, honorees gave insights into the work being done in our neighborhoods across Michigan—often, without recognition. The warm response of the audience acknowledging the importance of each contribution flooded the room with emotion.

Proceeds from the eventful night will help support Detroit community programs such as ProsperUs, which provides financial education for aspiring Hispanic entrepreneurs, and Latino Voices in Tech, focused on increasing Latino representation in the technology fields. The digital media outlet Latinos En Michigan TV is also supported by the event’s fundraising.

Many community sponsors were in attendance, showing continued support for Hispanic-led initiatives in the region; Rocket Companies, Ideal Group, Amezola Tree Service, and more.

For many, especially those from Southwest Detroit and Downriver communities like Lincoln Park, the event served as both a celebration and a reminder of the talent and dedication around us. Special nights like the Talentos Latinos Awards are important not only for those who are recognized, but for the broader community. Bringing to light the leadership, creativity, and perseverance that exist within Michigan’s Latinos population.

As the evening came to a close, guests lingered in the hall to greet old friends, take photos, and congratulate honorees. It was a proud night for many and just what the community needs—empowerment and unity.

  • Kenya Cruz – Talento musical latino
  • Mario Alberto Martínez Méndez – Artista activista latino
  • Cecilia Jaime Gutiérrez – Líder Educativa Latina
  • Marco Márquez – Voluntario Latino
  • Daphne Navarro – Premio Latinos que Inspiran
  • Alejandra Walters – Agente Inmobiliaria Latina de Michigan
  • Hermana Marie Benzing – Premio Amiga de los Latinos
  • Abogada Elizabeth Rosario  –Altruismo Latino
