Renown Colombian-American soprano Catalina Cuervo returned to Detroit to perform a special gala program last Saturday evening at Detroit’s Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in the heart of Mexicantown. The free concert featured holiday classics and sacred pieces in English, Latin, and Spanish.

Catalina Cuervo is regarded as one of the world’s leading voices of Latin American repertoire. She has performed the title role of Astor Piazzolla’s tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires more than 80 times and has frequently portrayed painter Frida Kahlo in Robert X. Rodriguez’s 1991 opera Frida.

Joining Catalina for the performance was performing was guitarist Álvaro Andrés Bermudez; pianist Nathalie Doucet, Detroit Opera’s Head of Music; and four emerging artists—soprano Melanie Spector; mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Barkidjija; tenor Leo Williams, and baritone Ben Reisinger. The four emerging artists are participants in Detroit Opera’s highly competitive 2022–23 Resident Artist Program, selected from among hundreds of singers who applied for the program.

The holiday concert is a direct result of Detroit Opera’s ongoing work to deepen connections with the Southwest Detroit community. In 2016, Detroit Opera board member Jesse Venegas and his wife, Yesenia, formed a partnership with Holy Redeemer Church. Presentations at the church have included concerts by Catalina Cuervo in 2017 and soprano Cecelia Violeta López in 2019, and Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors in 2018.

“We want to bring Latino artists and performers to SW Detroit. It’s important for our community to access to these performances and an opportunity to meet these performers,” said Jesse Venegas. “Catalina Cuervo and Alvaro Bermudez met with students at Holy Redeemer Grade school and it was an amazing experience for them and the students,” he added.

Detroit Opera aspires to influence the future of opera with a goal of invigorating new audiences through new and re-imagined productions, relevant to current times. It is creating an ambitious standard for American opera that emphasizes community, accessibility, artistic risk-taking, and collaboration, led by Yuval Sharon, Gary L. Wasserman Artistic Director; Associate Artistic Director Christine Goerke; Music Director Roberto Kalb; and President and CEO Wayne S. Brown.
