Hundreds Protest in Romulus Against Proposal to Convert Warehouse into ICE Detention Center

Cientos protestan en Romulus contra propuesta para convertir almacén en centro de detención de ICE

Varios cientos de manifestantes se reunieron y marcharon en Romulus el sábado en oposición a un centro de detención de ICE de 500 camas que se planea instalar en lo que actualmente es un almacén industrial.

“Quiero que la gente sepa que lo que está pasando está mal”, dijo Jarwin Garza, de 53 años, residente de Ferndale. “En este país tenemos debido proceso bajo nuestra Constitución, y no se está respetando por la actual administración presidencial”.

Los manifestantes se reunieron en Romulus Middle School y luego marcharon hacia el almacén de 261,450 pies cuadrados ubicado en 7525 Cogswell Street. Muchos llevaban carteles en contra de ICE y de los esfuerzos del presidente Donald Trump por deportar a la mayor cantidad posible de inmigrantes.

La propuesta de una nueva instalación de ICE, ubicada a solo seis millas del Detroit Metropolitan Airport, ha generado oposición de autoridades, incluyendo a la fiscal general de Michigan, Dana Nessel, y a la ciudad de Romulus, quienes presentaron una demanda para detener los planes del Department of Homeland Security en la ciudad. Además, la congresista federal Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) presentó el jueves la Ban Warehouse Detention Act, una iniciativa que impediría que funcionarios federales de inmigración conviertan almacenes en centros de detención.

Con un altavoz, un micrófono y una cámara, Jacob Gingrich, de 22 años, interrumpió la marcha mientras avanzaba. Gingrich, un influencer de redes sociales a favor de ICE, intentó repetidamente frenar la movilización, mientras los organizadores y sus voluntarios trataban de detenerlo, lo que provocó empujones y gritos.

Gingrich, quien habló varias veces en contra de la inmigración indocumentada y dijo que las políticas migratorias actuales son buenas para Estados Unidos, insistió en que no era simpatizante de MAGA.

“No apoyo lo que hizo Trump. No estoy de acuerdo con la razón para ir a la guerra con Irán”, dijo Gingrich.

Una vez que los manifestantes llegaron afuera del almacén, Gingrich, junto con David Shaheen, un residente de Detroit de 39 años, lograron interrumpir al vicegobernador Garlin Gilchrist, demócrata de Detroit que actualmente busca el cargo de secretario de estado.

El incidente escaló a empujones cuando varios manifestantes rodearon a los contramanifestantes para evitar una mayor confrontación y altercados físicos.

Después de que los marchistas regresaron a Romulus Middle School, se llevó a cabo una segunda manifestación afuera del almacén, donde el congresista federal Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit) y los representantes estatales Dylan Wegela (D-Garden City) y Donavan McKinney (D-Detroit) estuvieron entre quienes se dirigieron a los asistentes.

Emily Duchenne, de 68 años, residente de Oakland County y miembro de Community Aid for Empowerment, expresó su preocupación por el aumento significativo de detenciones realizadas por ICE en el área de Pontiac y en Michigan desde agosto.

“Es muy antiamericano encerrar a personas en almacenes. Eso no es lo que somos como país”, dijo. “Nunca pensé que viviría en un país con policía secreta que anda con máscaras”.

Los acontecimientos del día fueron precedidos por una huelga de hambre de inmigrantes detenidos en el North Lake Processing Center en Baldwin, Michigan. Según activistas presentes en la manifestación, la huelga sigue en curso y aseguran que cientos de inmigrantes participan, exigiendo mejores condiciones dentro de la instalación.

“Estamos escuchando que los guardias están marcando los nombres de las personas que rechazan las comidas y amenazándolas con transferencias si continúan”, dijo Ale Rojas, de No Detention Centers in Michigan.

JR Martin, también integrante del grupo, dijo que la huelga de hambre en la instalación de North Lake seguía activa hasta el sábado.

“Queremos presentarnos y amplificar sus demandas de atención médica adecuada, comida suficiente y una revisión real de sus casos”, dijo Martin. “En última instancia, queremos cerrar North Lake y asegurarnos de que esta instalación nunca vuelva a abrir”.
