Beautiful weather. Larger than expected crowd. High intensity game. Superb work by the Comerica Park grounds crew. It all added up to a terrific evening to showcase soccer in the Motor City. Crystal Palace of the English Premier League and Sevilla FC, the current Europa League champions from La Liga, delivered an entertaining game between two teams ramping up for the start of another busy European campaign.

A crowd of 21,178 filed into Comerica Park attired in a wide range of gear from hometown Detroit City FC to Lionel Messi jerseys to a full section of red and blue clad Crystal Palace supporters. The Palace fans had sufficient numbers to run through a number of songs that will certainly be heard at Selhurst Park during the upcoming season.

Normally, these preseason friendlies are somewhat tame affairs where the players are simply working on fitness and avoiding injuries. Crystal Palace and Sevilla set an early tone of physical play with a crunching challenge by Sevilla’s veteran defender Nemanja Gudelj on Palace’s budding star Eberechi Eze. The Palace number 10 looked like the best player on the pitch and received a number of hard tackles throughout the game. Gudelj was eventually sent off for a second bookable offense against the same player ten minutes from the end.

At the times the action threatened to escalate to more serious confrontations. Sevilla manager Jose Luis Mendilibar liked the intensity, “We are a couple of weeks from starting, so at this point we should be playing at the level of intensity required to start the season”, he told the press after the game. His team started well and were rewarded with an excellent goal before halftime.

Palace failed to clear a corner and the ball bounced to Croatian international Ivan Rakitic. The midfield leader struck a thunderous volley from a narrow angle that smacked the inside of the far post on the way into the net. Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone barely flinched before the ball whistled by him. Replays on the big scoreboard brought more “Oohs” and “Aahs” from the crowd. Sevilla went in at the break worthy of their 1-0 lead.

During the second half Mendilibar made use of his bench, bringing on a few substitutions during the course of the second 45, but Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson elected to play his starters the entire 90 minutes. When asked after the game, he replied simply, “They need the work.” Given that Palace had much the better of the second half, the team justified his decision. Hodgson said there was “Nobody on the bench we needed to see. This is the first time that we have put out a team that might resemble the team to start the season.”

Eberechi Eze, an England international, continued to attack from his position behind center forward Odsonne Edouard and lit up Comerica Park with a number of clever flicks and tricks on the ball. You could feel the crowd sit or stand a little more at attention when he was on the ball. He also gave Sevilla taste of his full potential to score the equalizer. After cleverly dribbling through three lunging defenders, he coolly slid the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Mark Dimitrovic to make the score 1-1. A quick sudden death penalty kick tie breaker at the end of the game was resolved when Rakitic scored and defender Joachim Anderson hit the crossbar, giving Sevilla the Motor City Cup trophy on the night.

The Sevilla manager appreciated the opportunity to win a trophy, saying that getting results instills confidence in the players. Hodgson said, “I’m optimistic that if we play as we did tonight, against such a quality opponent, that we can have a good start to the season.” He went on to point out that he has lost five first team players during the summer and only brought in one, so he has concerns about the depth of his team; that included a pointed comment that the chairman and the board haven’t given him enough resources yet.

A group of people playing soccer

Both managers expressed their appreciation for the crowd and the setting in Detroit. Mendilibar said, “We were impressed and surprised by the atmosphere. We don’t usually experience that in preseason games in Europe. The players really enjoyed the game.” Hodgson, who took a couple minutes to reminisce about leading Switzerland at the Silverdome during the 1994 World Cup said he “would have no hesitation to come back if invited.” He went on the praise the welcome he and his team received at Comerica Park and during training at Oakland University. He also had a great compliment for the Comerica Park grounds crew saying, “We weren’t sure what to expect coming into the game. The pitch played better than we thought it would given the difficulties of converting from baseball to soccer.”

Given the praise heaped upon Detroit and the stadium by both Sevilla and Crystal Palace and the unexpectedly large crowd for two teams that don’t typically move the needle, perhaps there will be more opportunities to bring in preseason games in future years. Let’s hope that with the Copa America, World Club Cup and FIFA World Cup coming to the US during the next three summers that Detroit isn’t left out of the action.

A group of people playing soccer

A group of people playing soccer
