The 35th 2025 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix is almost here. It is a 3 day event, with FREE day happening this Friday, May 30th, and the races taking place on both Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st, through the streets of Downtown Detroit.

Here are some fun facts about the Detroit Grand Prix

WHAT: The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will return home to the Streets of Downtown Detroit, May 30-June 1, 2025. The event will include the Chevrolet INDYCAR Grand Prix featuring the cars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, the GTP and the GTD PRO classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the rising stars of racing competing in INDY NXT by Firestone. The event is collectively referred to as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

WHEN: Friday-Sunday May 30-June 1, 2025

WHERE: Downtown Detroit Street Circuit

TRACK LENGTH: 1.7 miles / 9 Turns

RACE HISTORY: The first Detroit Grand Prix was in 1982 and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of downtown Detroit before becoming a CART- sanctioned race in 1989. The
race moved to Belle Isle in 1992 continuing under the CART/ Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit and spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After challenging economic times delayed the event after the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event and the current promo- tional group as a subsidiary of the DDP. The 2019 event marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit’s history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned in 2021 with limited attendance due to health and safety protocols in place for the event. After decades on Belle Isle, the 2023 Grand Prix returned to its roots on the Downtown Detroit streets for the first time since 1991.

WINNERS AT THE DETROIT GRAND PRIX:

The Chevrolet INDYCAR

Grand Prix included nearly 30 more on-track passes than the 2023 race, despite more laps run under caution. With passing areas available in six of the nine turns on the tough and technical track, the race featured 217 passes – more than any other street circuit on the series schedule this season by a wide margin. With 53 green-flag laps, the INDYCAR field averaged more than four passes a lap under green over the course of the race, which is just under the same number per lap as this year’s thrilling Indianapolis 500. Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon used more of his fuel-mileage magic and the correct tire strategy to win the race for his record fourth career victory at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

The IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship made its debut on the Detroit street circuit with the Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport No.

10 Acura claiming the overall victory and the GTP class win with drivers Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque. Taylor boldly passed Mathieu Jaminet’s No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 and led the final 20 laps to win the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic for WTR. In the GTD PRO class, drivers Laurin Heinrich and Seb Priaulx drove their Porsche 911 to the win for AO Racing. It marked the second consecutive win for the AO duo, who extended their champion- ship lead.

The future stars of INDYCAR were also in action as Louis Foster dominated the INDY NXT by Firestone race leading all 45 laps to win from the pole for the Andretti Global team. Foster maintained his cool through

four restarts and was relatively unchallenged throughout all 45 laps around the nine-turn temporary street circuit. It was the second consecutive victory for the Briton, whose closest rival was HMD Motorsports driver Caio Collett.
