On Saturday, June 3, the 31st annual Concert of Colors Part I took place in Mexicantown-Southwest Detroit. It was a fantastic day filled with Latino music, headlined by the Chicano band Las Cafeteras.

The concert began with DJ CISCO mixing music to set the Latino vibe for the day.

Then, the Ballet Folklorico Raíces Mexicanas presented traditional Mexican dances, followed by the Chromatic Violins, a group of students from the Cesar Chavez Upper Elementary School who played a remarkable musical repertoire.

Moreover, the traditional Bomba and music from RicanStruction led by Ozzie Rivera showcased Puerto Rican music and folklore.

“I enjoy the Concert of Colors-MexicantownCDC coming back to Southwest Detroit because it brings the community together to enjoy the incredible culture of Southwest and highlights local SW artists and vendors. I also enjoy having Las Cafeteras being here to perform and letting them experience our music and culture in this part of the country,” said Alexis Escoto, Southwest Detroit resident.

Local and renowned singers Gabriel Duran and Camilla Cantu offered a vibrant eclectic performance and invited attendees to dance with them. Las Cafeteras closed the show with an amazing performance.

After more than a decade the Concert of Colors made it back in the community, however Detroit’s Latino community has been involved with the Concert of Colors from its very beginning.

This edition of the Concert of Colors was made possible by the collaborative efforts between the Annual Concert of Colors and Mexicantown CDC and the contributions of Gloria Rocha and Ozzie Rivera, and the sponsorship of AETNA-CVS Health.
