Ecuador

Ecuador is a South American country with a Pacific coast and a population of more than 16 million. It is the only country in the world with the Rights of Nature included in its constitution. It has recently emerged as an energy powerhouse due to its eco-sustainable energy projects. It has the highest concentration of rivers, and its diversity is recognized worldwide. Part of its national territory is located in the protected areas of the Amazon.

In addition to being located on the Equator, in the middle of the world, separating the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere, it offers a unique tourist attraction, as it is in this country where the changing forces of nature’s laws are visible with the twists and turns of the water.

Ecuador achieved its independence from Spain on May 24, 1822, and joined what was once Gran Colombia, along with Panama and Venezuela; territories that were part of Simón Bolívar’s project. The Bolivarian dream dissolved in 1830, when, in pursuit of independence from Colombia, the Republic of Ecuador was formed, with Juan José Flores as president.

Ecuador’s territory is divided into: Parishes (urban or rural), which form the Cantons, which form the Provinces, and these in turn form the Administrative Regions. Each of these entities and the Metropolitan Districts have a Decentralized Autonomous Government, responsible for implementing policies within its jurisdiction.

Basilica of the National Vow: Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Basilica of the National Vow is located next to the convent of the Oblate Fathers in the historic center of Quito. With its Neo-Gothic architecture, it is the largest church in the entire American continent.

Legend has it that the day work stops and the construction of the Basilica of the National Vow is considered complete, the day will mark the beginning of the fall of Ecuador as a Free and Sovereign State.

The Basilica’s construction began at the initiative of Father Julio Matovelle in 1883 and with the support of then-President José María Plácido Caamaño, seeking to pay homage to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, patron saint and guardian of the needs of the Ecuadorian nation. The Basilica was designed by French architect Emilio Tarlier, based on the previously designed Parisian Cathedral of Our Lady. The first phase of construction took approximately 40 years, until it was inaugurated in 1924. The work was not yet complete, and the detailing continues to this day.

In 1985, it was blessed by Pope John Paul II, and in 1988, it was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Basilica of the National Vow is compared, for its architectural magnificence, to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Its towers tower over the city, enhancing its beauty and lending special splendor to its neo-Gothic architectural style, characterized by tall towers, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and large stained-glass windows.
