Free Estate Planning Workshops Helping Detroiters Plan for Their Future

Homeownership has long been one of the most reliable ways for families to build generational wealth in the United States. With the average cost of buying a home nearly double what it was sixty years ago – even after adjusting for inflation – protecting that investment has never been more critical.

Last year, the City of Detroit announced free estate planning and will preparation services that educate people about essential life planning and legacy documents.

“Without these documents, you could lose the home that has been in your family for generations, erasing years of hard-earned progress and stability,” explains Libby Palackdharry, director of operations for the Detroit Housing Network (DHN) at CHN Housing Partners.

Qualifying Detroit homeowners also have the opportunity to have five different documents prepared on their behalf, for free, through this program: Durable Power of Attorney for Finances, Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare, Last Will and Testament, Ladybird Deed, and Trusts. With these documents in place, you can:

  1. Appoint someone to manage your financial affairs in your absence. This ensures that bills are paid, assets are safeguarded, and investments are managed even if you’re not available.
  2. Reduce the risk of disputes over property ownership, ensuring that your asset passes directly to the intended recipient.
  3. Automatically transfer property upon the homeowner’s death and avoid the often complex and public probate process.

“As your lawyers, we will work with you while keeping your information private and protected,” explains Erma Thomas, managing attorney and director of programs at Elder Law & Advocacy Center (ELAC), a division of Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan, the organization leading the program. “We are here to help you secure your family’s home, finances and future.”

How it Works & How to Sign Up

Free estate planning workshops are being held virtually and in-person every month. A virtual Spanish language workshop will take place on March 6 at 5:30 PM with the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation and Bridging Communities.

Detroit homeowners who attend the workshop and make below 300% of the Federal Poverty Line annually will qualify for free estate planning services through Elder Law and Advocacy Center.

If you are interested in attending an estate planning workshop, you can call (866) 313-2520 or visit MyDHN.education to register. Our call center representatives can assist you in Spanish, English Arabic or Bengali.

You will never be asked about your immigration status. If you have questions about privacy, you can reach out to us at DHN@chnhousingpartners.org.
