Garbey was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in 1956. In 1980, Garbey climbed aboard a small fishing boat and became the first member of the Cuban National Baseball Team to emigrate to the USA along with  200 other Cuban refugees as part of the Mariel boatlift — or “freedom flotilla”. It was not a “defection”; Garbey left Cuba to play baseball; it was as simple as that. After being taken to an Army base in Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, where Tigers scout Orlando Peña — himself a Cuban and a pitcher in the major leagues — found him playing catch in a pair of blue jeans and a T-shirt. Still, Pena saw  a major league player in the making. After being released from the Army Camp to his cousin Merta, Garbey ultimately ended up with a ticket to Lakeland from the Tigers. Pena offered Garbey a $ 2,500 contract with the Tigers on June 6, 1980.

By 1984, Garbey was selected by Sparky Anderson to start the season with the Tigers and he played a key role in the 35-5 start. In the first 21 games with the Tigers, he had an average of .583 with 15 RBI’s in 45 appearances in the batting box. On April 7th , 1984, he played first base for six innings of Jack Morris’s no-hitter vs the White Sox.  Finishing the ’84 season with the Tigers he started 110 games and hit .287. With more than 300 plate appearances Garbey finished third in batting average behind Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker.

During the decades that followed his stint with the Tigers, Garbey was all over baseball in almost every role that one could imagine. He lives in the metro Detroit area with his wife Kimberly and family.  Now he will be present in the broadcast booth at Comerica for all 81 home games of the 2025 season.
