27th Letter Books Meets Growing Bilingual Demand Children’s Books in Spanish and Local Authors are Specialty

Español Abajo

By Eric Guzmán

As Southwest Detroit continues to grow and become more diverse, so too do its businesses. 27th Letter Books, a book store on Michigan Ave near W. Grand Blvd., carries a variety of books that range from local Detroit authors to bilingual children’s books in various languages.

“We like to focus on books that are by authors who are historically underrepresented and like to focus on books that are well-written and diverse books,” says Co-owner Jasmine Cooper. “We like to include books that include all definitions of diverse (Hispanic, Latino, African American authors) because they’ve been historically underrepresented in the publishing industry.”

One of the highlights of this hidden gem is its selection of bilingual children’s books. “Most of [our bilingual books] are in the children’s area,” Cooper states. “We do try to keep the Spanish and the English books for just about all the sections we have.”

As Spanish continues to grow as the second most spoken language in the United States, having access to bilingual books has now become a high demand. A study from Arizona State University shows that reading bilingual books to children at an early age “helps them support Spanish vocabulary learning.”

27th Letter Books is still a new business, and they continue to look for ways to impact the community; however, they are aware of some of the things they need to work on to draw the community in.

“One of the things we lack is just being able to speak Spanish”, Cooper states. Although she is learning Spanish, she doesn’t speak it well enough to communicate effectively with other people. “I think [it is important to keep] spreading the word in Spanish to [let the community] know there are books here for Spanish speakers and readers and to check out the space.”

Jake Spease, Art Manager and Co-owner, also expressed his thoughts on community outreach and what he believes may be the next step to help the business grow. “I think we have struggled to spread awareness that we do have bilingual books and as in any retail space, you need to have things that are selling and not just for show, so to speak,” Spease stated, “So we want to have a bookstore that’s bilingual, but none of us are independently wealthy enough to be able to make the investment to have just a bunch of Spanish language books. So, I think we would like to expand that.”

The bookstore offers a bilingual story time every Saturday at 10am, where volunteers from the community read out loud to the children, followed by an arts and craft session. Raquel Tassinari, along with her husband, brought their son to the bookstore for their first children’s story time event and spoke on the importance of teaching their son a second language.

“A part of preserving tradition is also keeping the language going”, Tassinari said. Although they have not started introducing him to a second language just yet, they do plan to start when he’s ready. Tassinari added she wants her son to learn a second language to communicate with members of her family who do speak Spanish.

Tassinari grew up in a household speaking two languages and reflected on how it helped her in life. “I think the more languages [you know] the better. It was very easy for me [to learn a second language] because I started learning when I was young. It’s been great and helps all around with communicating with people when you travel and helps stimulate your brain”.

27th Letter Books started as a pop-up in June of 2019 and found its current location on the corner of Michigan Ave and 25th street back in June of 2021. Cooper shares the business with fellow co-owners Erin and Drew Pineda and Jake Spease, and also serves as the general manager. Cooper and Spease joined Erin and Drew back in February of 2021. “We were just drawn to the building itself,” Cooper states. “[When] we saw the location, we thought it would be a cool space to have art, feature local artists as well as have books; but I think it’s just the location and the serendipity of finding this place [while] looking at other places and having it collide with what we wanted to do as a business, we decided this location would be a good location.”

The store from the inside has a very beautiful dynamic to it. As you walk into the building, you get a hint of modern industrial workspace. However, as you venture into the store and walk across the creaky, yet subtle wooden planks that make up the floor, you get a bright light inviting you to explore the rest of the books the store has to offer. Since opening at this location, 27th Letter Books has experienced its fair share of struggles, including flooding, a car crash, and most recently, has been the victim of a fraud scam all within the past year. While the scam has taken the biggest toll on the business, the owners have been successful in their GoFundMe campaign and will be able to keep their doors open for the foreseeable future.

If you would like to visit 27th Letter Books, they are located at 3546 Michigan Ave, Detroit, MI 48216 or you can visit their website at www.27thletterbooks.com.
