Rich History of Latino Players on the Detroit Tigers Continues

Ozzie Virgil from the Dominican Republic debuted on the Tiger roster 67 years ago. Humberto “Chico” Fernandez from Cuba became the first regular position player in 1960. Aurelio Rodriguez, a Mexican, played from 1971 to 1979 and won a Golden Glove in 1976. Willie Hernandez (Mexico) won the 1984 AL MVP and Cy Young award helping the Tigers win the World Series in 1968.

In the last 50 years, many notable Latino players have been on the roster, including Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Guillen, Omar Infante, Maglio Ordóñez, Aurelio Lopez, Hank Aguirre, Iván “Pudge” Rodríguez, and Carlos Peña. 

Today, after more than a third of the season in the books, the Tigers are in the hunt for the best record in the Majors and Latino players are a big part of the team’s success. The Latino players who are currently on the Tigers’ active roster appear below with their stats through 52 games.

In the most notable move of the season, Javier Baez has moved from the infield to the outfield with astonishing success. 

Four Latino players are on the active 40-man roster going into Memorial Day.

La rica historia de los jugadores latinos en los Detroit Tigers continúa

Ozzie Virgil, de la República Dominicana, debutó en la plantilla de los Tigres hace 67 años. Humberto “Chico” Fernández, de Cuba, se convirtió en el primer jugador de posición regular en 1960. Aurelio Rodríguez, mexicano, jugó de 1971 a 1979 y ganó un Guante de Oro en 1976. Willie Hernández (México) ganó el Jugador Más Valioso de la Liga Americana y el premio Cy Young en 1984, ayudando a los Tigres a ganar la Serie Mundial en 1968.

En los últimos 50 años, muchos jugadores latinos notables han estado en la plantilla, incluyendo a Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Guillén, Omar Infante, Maglio Ordóñez, Aurelio López, Hank Aguirre, Iván “Pudge” Rodríguez y Carlos Peña.
