Another Tragic Incident of Gun Violence in Our State

The rock on the MSU campus says it all: How Many More? On Monday, a quiet night on the Michigan State University campus in E. Lansing was interrupted by gunfire and when it was over, three students lay dead and another five students were fighting for their lives in nearby Sparrow Hospital. Hours later the shooter was found dead by his own hand. The violence occurred 15 months after the deadly shooting at Oxford High School and five years, nearly to the day, of the anniversary of the school shooting at Parkland High School in Florida.

Governor Whitmer, an MSU alumnus, spoke about the tragedy. “Our Spartan community and Michiganders across the state are devastated. It doesn’t have to be this way,” she said. “Certain places are supposed to be about community, learning, or joy — elementary schools and college campuses, movie theaters and dance halls, grocery stores and workplaces. They should not be the sites of bloodshed. This is a uniquely American problem. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them. We plan who that last text or call would go to. We should not, we cannot, accept living like this,” she resolved.

Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, Joe Tate, another Spartan alumnus, was equally sadden and angered by the continuing gun violence in our state. “The dread I felt as I heard the news of a gunman on campus was quickly replaced by anger. I am angry that the safety and security of Michigan State University has been shattered by the uniquely American scourge of gun violence,” he said.

“We have a choice,” continued the Speaker. “We can continue to debate the reasons for gun violence in America, or we can act. We cannot continue to do the same thing over and over again and hope for a different outcome. Multiple people were shot and killed at Michigan State University. I have no understanding left for those in a position to effect change who are unwilling to act,” he said.

With both houses in the Michigan State legislature controlled by the Democrats for the first time in 40 years, the public safety and gun violence prevention measures proposed by Governor Whitmer in her recent State of the State Address have a very good chance of passing in one form or another this year. See a brief summary of the Governor’s plans below. For those who may be in need of mental health support services, see the list of resources available in our community below. Governor Whitmer’s Plan for Public Safety and Gun Violence Prevention

The Challenge:

Right now, too many people feel unsafe at the store or in their houses of worship. Too many kids feel unsafe going to school or playing outside. In Governor Whitmer’s first term, Michigan invested over $1 billion in public safety, but we must do more to reduce crime and gun violence.

The Plan:

Governor Whitmer is proposing an additional comprehensive investment in law enforcement including better training, oversight, and access to mental health resources. To reduce gun violence, she is proposing common sense reforms—universal background checks, safe storage laws, and extreme risk protection orders (red flag laws) — so we can make sure guns are kept out of the hands of those who might represent a danger to themselves or others and stored safely at home.
