Due to expected rainfall on Tuesday, August 6 (the annually scheduled day for National Night Out) the Fourth Precinct of the Detroit Police Department moved to postpone the festivities until the next day Wednesday, August 7.
The Fourth Precinct’s National Night Out was held at Southwest Detroit’s beloved Clark Park, one of the oldest and most well used parks in the city. Between the hours of 4pm and 8pm, the community showed up in numbers to partake in festivities presented by the Fourth Precinct Neighborhood Police Officers.
There were bounce houses where children were able to enjoy defying gravity, but the main attraction was face painting. Children and parents alike stood in line, patiently waiting to have themselves decorated by DPD’s volunteer community make-up artist.
The Detroit Police Department Mounted Police showed up with a horse in tow, as well as canine officers with their dogs. The children enjoyed petting the animals and many pictures were taken with them.
In addition to the attractions, a DJ provided music to keep everyone entertained and the Neighborhood Police Officers operated the grill. Hotdogs, potato chips and water were provided for everyone.
Shelley Holderbaum, Commander of the Fourth Precinct, and Captain Brandon Lewis both believe that this event is very important not just to the community, but to the officers as well. It gives everyone a chance to come together and enjoy each other’s company bridging any gaps or misunderstandings. Commander Holderbaum also feels that the Fourth Precinct has the most supportive community in regard to the police citywide. “National Night Out is my favorite community event because it is geared towards children and families,” said Commander Holderbaum. “It is important to let the community know that the officers are here to help and protect them.”
