 United States of America

American multiculturalism comes alive through the history, diversity and spirit that define the U.S. and Detroit

The United States is a multicultural country. Although it began as an independence project led by the settler-pilgrims of the Thirteen British Colonies on the northeastern coast of the American continent through a vote held in 1776 at the Continental Congress, which represented both the British Crown and the colonists, the vote favored independence in order to establish a new nation: the United States of America. The nation would be represented by the colors blue, red, and white. White symbolizes purity and innocence; blue represents vigilance and justice; and red stands for resilience and valor. The flag would feature thirteen horizontal red stripes representing the Thirteen Colonies, along with a blue rectangle in the upper left corner bearing white stars that represent the states of the nation.

With the founding of the United States, a new process began. As the nineteenth century unfolded, interest grew in expanding westward into what is now known as the Midwest, and later into territories that, although already inhabited by the Indigenous peoples of the region, had not all been claimed by European kingdoms or settlers of European descent. This was followed by the construction of railroads across the northern part of the continent as a major undertaking.

In 1845, the annexation of Texas took place. In 1843 and 1847, treaties were signed to negotiate with the newly established Mexico, leading the United States to acquire more than half of what was then Mexican territory. This was followed by the purchase of Alaska in 1867, which at the time belonged to Russia. Later, in 1898, seeking to expand its territory beyond the continental mainland, the United States went to war with Spain to take Puerto Rico, granting it the status of an annexed territory. Around the same period, it also achieved the annexation of Hawaii following the coup d’état it supported against Queen Liliʻuokalan, the last Hawaiian monarch. In 1917, the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark, leaving them with the status of an unincorporated territory.

The most popular cities in the United States include New York, known for its artistic character, its role as a financial center, and its multicultural population; Chicago, founded twice, the second time after the great fire; Miami, home to the country’s largest Hispanic population; Los Angeles, with Hollywood creating a movie-like world for audiences everywhere; and Las Vegas, recognized as a center of entertainment.

Nor should we leave Detroit aside. Detroit Motown, with its remarkable creative spirit reflected in every corner of the city through its colorful houses and artistic movements that have left their mark on music, painting, and sculpture alike; an industrial capital, the Motor City, home to Ford, Chevrolet, General Motors, and Chrysler; the home of House music; a city embracing the possibility of greener communities through local urban farms. Latino Detroit, immigrant Detroit, Detroit as home.

Today, the United States has gained international recognition as a military power as well as a commercial power. The large number of American companies operating around the globe and their transnational capital enable the country to exert influence through commercial investment worldwide.

Let us celebrate this anniversary by honoring multiculturalism, the dreams, and the efforts of all those who have come to this land of aspirations and tireless determination. Let us enjoy another year of this nation.
