Lincoln Park, MI – In Lincoln Park, where Latinos account for roughly 28 percent of the population, the community’s growing presence is reshaping the city’s social, economic and civic landscape. What was once a smaller and less visible segment of the city’s population has grown into an increasingly important part of the community.
Over the past decade, Lincoln Park has seen a steady increase in Latino-owned businesses, community organizations and services. Nonprofit agencies from Southwest Detroit have also recognized this growth, establishing satellite offices in Lincoln Park to connect with and serve the city’s expanding Latino population.
But the transformation extends beyond business and community services. As the Latino population grows, so does civic engagement. More residents are becoming involved in local issues, participating in the political process and stepping forward as candidates for public office.
The emergence of Latino candidates in Lincoln Park reflects a broader shift in Downriver politics —one in which a growing and increasingly engaged Latino electorate is making its voice heard.
Here are the candidates seeking elected office Downriver in this year’s general election on November 3:
Belda Garza, Candidate for Lincoln Park City Council
For more than three decades, Belda Garza has dedicated her life to public service, community advocacy, and creating opportunities for families across Southeast Michigan. Her leadership journey has included making history as the first Latina elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, serving on the Detroit Board of Education, and providing leadership on numerous boards and commissions at the local and state levels.

Fourteen years ago, Garza made Lincoln Park her home. Since then, she has continued her commitment to community service as a member of St. Michael’s All Angels and as a founding member of the Lincoln Park Social Development Coalition. Her years of experience working with residents, community organizations, and government have given her a deep understanding of the challenges facing local families.
As a candidate for Lincoln Park City Council, Garza brings decades of experience, a strong record of community advocacy, and a commitment to listening to residents. Her priorities include helping seniors remain healthy, independent, and connected to their community; addressing the impact of rising utility costs on working families and seniors; and supporting efforts to keep Lincoln Park neighborhoods safe, strong, and welcoming.
Belda Garza believes effective local leadership begins with listening to residents, bringing people together, and turning community concerns into meaningful action
Carlos Salcido, Candidate for Lincoln Park City Council, Incumbent
I’m Carlos Salcido from Lincoln Park MI. I’d like to share a brief family history. My parents met in the late 1930’s working in the fields in the Thumb area.

They married in 1945 and eventually purchased a home in Lincoln Park in 1960. I was born a short time later and attended Lincoln Park Public Schools and graduated at L.P.H.S. Prior to and after graduation I worked in Lincoln Park at several retail stores. Fortunately, that helped me to get to know many residents and former classmates. I always had an interest in watching Council meetings and attending meetings as well and thought that I would like to help people so I ran for Council in 2018 and was very fortunate to win. I was elected as Council President in 2020 and I am currently still serving in that capacity.
In the November 2024 election lots of residents came out, young, old, and many ethnic backgrounds including many Hispanics. Since being on Council the most rewarding achievement in my opinion has been the demolishing of the Shopping Center on Southfield Road and Dix Toledo road, also known at the Sears Shopping Center and now seeing new restaurants and retail currently being built. However I do miss the Sears store. Thank you for the opportunity to tell my little story.
Dawn Sanchez-Trueblood, Candidate for Lincoln Park City Council
My name is Dawn Sanchez-Trueblood, and I grew up in Southwest Detroit, attending Wilson Middle School and Southwestern High School, graduating in 1991. Growing up surrounded by people from many cultures was one of the greatest gifts of my education. That experience taught me the value of diversity, community, and collaboration—lessons that have stayed with me throughout my life.

I decided to run for City Council in Lincoln Park because I believe I have something meaningful to contribute — and because I believe our residents deserve strong advocacy. I am a firm believer in transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to our city.
After all, it is our residents who fund our local government, and they deserve to know how their tax dollars are being used. My goal is to work collaboratively with the mayor and council to accomplish as many city-centered priorities as possible while balancing our budget. Reducing unnecessary costs must be a priority, especially as families are feeling the financial strain more than ever. We need to be strategic, make thoughtful decisions, and maximize the resources we already have.
Krystle-Marie Medina, Candidate for 25th District Court Judge
I am running for Judge of the 25th District Court because I believe our community deserves a judge who is experienced, fair, accessible, and deeply connected to the people the court serves.

For the past 15 years, I have called this community home, and for more than a decade, I have served as court-appointed counsel in the 25th District Court. I have seen firsthand how the decisions made in a courtroom affect individuals, families, and futures. I want to ensure that every person who enters the courtroom is treated with dignity, listened to with patience, and given a fair opportunity to be heard regardless of their background, income, or the language they speak.
For more than 12 years, I have owned and operated my law practice in Lincoln Park, representing clients in crimi- nal and immigration matters and appearing in courtrooms throughout Michigan. As a Spanish-speaking attorney, I understand the importance of making our justice system more accessible to the diverse communities of Ecorse, Lincoln Park, and River Rouge.
I do not simply want to be a judge – I want to be your judge and to serve every person in our community with fairness, respect, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
