SER Metro-Detroit celebrated its 54th Anniversary at its Annual Amigos de SER Business Recognition Luncheon held at the MGM Grand on Monday, October 6, 2025.  The keynote speaker was Ms. Laura Grannemann, Executive Director, Rocket Community Fund and Gilbert Family Foundation.

In her keynote address, Ms. Grannemann spoke about the uncertainties of todays’ world. “There is one thing that gives me hope: this community. The people in this room are not just witnesses to change. You drive it. Detroit sets the national standard for public-private partnerships. Together, we have creatively tackled some of the city’s most persistent challenges: reducing blight, decreasing tax foreclosures, increasing homeownership, and lowering unemployment.”

Manuela Zarate, center front, with SER leadership.

Grannemann added, “At the Rocket Community Fund and Gilbert Family Foundation, we start with housing. A stable home is foundational to every part of our lives. It provides security, peace and predictability. But we also know this: housing alone is not enough. While a home is the most important factor for stability, employment and income are the only true pathways to economic prosperity. Having a job that pays fairly, offers dignity, and provides opportunities to learn and advance—that’s what allows families not just to survive, but to thrive. In other words, housing is the foundation, but employment is the staircase to opportunity.”

Special recognition was given during the luncheon to Manuela M. Zarate for her 50 Years of Service. The award was presented to Zarate by Ignacio Salazar, President and CEO of SER Jobs for Progress National, who made the wise decision to hire Zarate so many years ago. Over the decades, she has risen to the position of Vice President and Chief Operations Officer overseeing operations across Michigan, Illinois and Texas.

The luncheon included an awards ceremony recognizing the many partners, funders, and employers who invest in the Detroit community through SER’s work. This year’s “Amigo of the Year Award” was presented to Rocket Community Fund for their ongoing partnership and support of SER Metro’s programs both in Detroit and nationally. Marriott International received the “Employer of the Year Award” for more than 10 years of partnership with SER and for hiring more than 700 SER participants since 2023.

The “Journey to Success” awards were presented to program graduates Chantanea Fletcher, Anna Montoya, Arianna Ortiz and Sylan Sanders. Two additional graduates, Sacha Cruz and Diamond Neal-Perry will each receive $1,000 in honor of the “Frank D. Stella Scholarship Program”.

Eva Garza Dewaelsche, President and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit thanked Keynote Speaker Laura Grannemann, the event sponsors and SER staff for their contributions to the successful event. “We can’t thank Laura enough for her inciteful presentation, which inspired everyone greatly, and our sponsors for their generous support, which not only facilitated our event, but also demonstrated their commitment to our community.”

Overheard from guests at the Amigos de SER Luncheon:

“Attending the Amigos de SER Metro Luncheon reaffirmed my belief in the strength of our community and the importance of giving back. It was inspiring to hear students share how SER Metro has empowered them to pursue their goals with confidence.”- Marisol Quesada, MANA de Metro Detroit

“Yesterday’s Amigos de SER Luncheon beautifully reflected the diversity of the people SER proudly serves. Hearing the inspiring testimonies of two SER graduates reminded us how SER provides the tools and support to change the trajectory of someone’s life — and in doing so, the future of their family. After 65 years, SER continues to transform lives and strengthen our communities.”- Mary Carmen Munoz,  Executive Director of LASED

SER Program Manager, Malia Salaam, Senator Mary Cavanagh.

“SER Metro has been a dedicated pillar of Southeast Michigan. Their work empowering young people, workers, and families through education, training, and opportunity is transformational in our communities, and this luncheon was a celebration of what they have built and the lives they continue to change,” said Senator Mary Cavanagh, Chair of the Legislative Latino Caucus, “That’s why I fought to secure an investment in this year’s state budget to strengthen their mission, ensure their programs continue to grow, and enable them to make needed improvements to their Samaritan Center. I am proud to stand alongside SER Metro as they build on this success, and I look forward to supporting their work for years to come.”- State Senator Mary Cavanagh

“It was an honor to be a part of a wonderful celebration of an organization that works tirelessly to improve the lives of people. SER Metro has touched over a million people since they began, and the world is a better place because of them.”- State Representative Tyrone Carter

Sen Darrin Camilleri and David C Lewis

“Attending the Amigos de SER Business Recognition Luncheon was inspiring. The event highlighted the incredible work SER is doing to connect people with technical training and career opportunities. From workforce development to strengthening local businesses, it’s clear they are making a real difference.”- State Senator Darrin Camilleri

“Congratulations on a successful Amigos de SER luncheon! On behalf of The Leona Group and La Academia César Chávez, we celebrate your many successes and lasting impact. Our community is proud of all that you continue to accomplish in service to others. And to Manuela Maldonado-Zárate – congratulations on an incredible 50 years of service! -“ Dr. Juan Jose Martinez, Superintendent Cesar Chavez Academy District
