On Monday, November 7, AT&T and SER Metro-Detroit, Jobs for Progress, Inc. announced the opening of a new Connected Learning Center inside SER Metro-Detroit in Southwest Detroit. The new center will provide internet access and education tools to those who face connectivity barriers holding them back from success in the digital world.

The center is part of the AT&T Connected Learning initiative and the corporation’s $2 billion commitment from 2021 to 2023 to address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. In addition, AT&T has made a $50,000 contribution to SER Metro-Detroit. This is the second Connected Learning Center that AT&T has opened in Detroit.

The Connected Learning Center at SER Metro-Detroit is the 20th center AT&T has opened nationwide. The centers are housed within local organizations that support underserved populations, including some of our nation’s most vulnerable students and families. The goal of the centers is to encourage more families to get connected through free access to the internet and education resources that teach the value of broadband and how to use it safely and effectively.

“The new Connected Learning Center will be a tremendous asset for all the students and residents who rely on SER Metro, connecting them to the internet resources they need,” said Eva Garza Dewaelsche, President and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit. “AT&T has been a loyal collaborator to us for decades, supporting our work and providing us tools we can use to serve our community and the people who call it home.”

In Detroit, it is estimated that 25 percent of Detroit residents do not have access to high-quality connectivity and are unable to participate in the modern online world, an issue known as the digital divide.

“Our investment in the AT&T Connected Learning Center at SER Metro directly reflects our commitment to get more Detroiters connected and make an impact in the communities we serve,” said David Lewis, President of AT&T Michigan. “The center will give local families access to free internet connectivity as well as educational and mentoring resources to help them succeed in digital school and job environments.”

The new center will help to bridge the digital divide by providing free access to range of digital resources all under one roof, including: high-speed AT&T Fiber internet, Wi-Fi, Dell Technologies computers, free education resources, and tutoring and mentoring from AT&T employees.

The free education resources within the center will help students and families participate in digital engagement. These include The Achievery, a free digital learning platform created by AT&T, as well as free digital literacy courses and workshops created with the Public Library Association.

As part of its ongoing commitment to championing digital inclusion for underserved communities, Dell Technologies donated Dell OptiPlex computers and Dell monitors, which feature integrated audio and webcams to support virtual learning. Overland-Tandberg, a Black-owned company, is part of AT&T’s Supplier Diversity Initiative. The leading global technology and IT services company led the onsite configuration of the computers.

AT&T supports the Detroit community by providing funding to local community organizations tackling the digital divide, including organizations that work with youth, adults and underrepresented communities. AT&T opened Detroit’s first Connected Learning Center in February of this year in collaboration with Jefferson East, Inc., locating the high-speed internet lab in the organization’s new Neighborhood Resource Hub in the City’s Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood.

For more information about the Connected Learning Center at SER Metro-Detroit, contact Veronica Sanchez-Peavey at 313.945.5200, ext. 4262 or vsanchez@sermetro.org

AT&T and SER Metro-Detroit Open Connected Learning Center
