Detroit Election Videos Bridge Gap Between Candidates and Voters

EL CENTRAL Hispanic News is proud to announce a partnership with Detroit nonprofit CitizenDetroit that has produced over sixty videos with 31 candidates running for public office across Detroit’s municipal elections.

The collaboration brings candidates directly to voters and covers races for mayor, all seven City Council districts plus at-large seats, police commissioners for each district, and community advisory boards for districts 4 and 5.

“CitizenDetroit is proud to partner with EL CENTRAL to share candidate videos across Instagram and Facebook,” said CitizenDetroit CEO Sheila Cockrel. “This collaboration expands access to civic information, ensuring Detroit voters can hear directly from those seeking to represent them. By meeting people where they are—on the platforms they use every day—we’re strengthening democracy and making sure more voices are heard.”

While every candidate across all races was invited to participate in the free opportunity, the 60+ videos feature those who chose to take part. The interviews include several high-profile candidates, such as mayoral frontrunner Mary Sheffield, as well as candidates in the District 6 race (which represents Southwest Detroit) including incumbent Gabriela Santiago-Romero and challenger Tyrone Carter, a current state representative.

All mayoral candidate videos and District 6 candidate videos have been translated into Spanish and are now available on EL CENTRAL’s social media platforms: @elcentralmedia on Instagram and EL CENTRAL Hispanic News on Facebook. To ensure voters have complete information, accompanying posts for each race list all candidates, whether they participated in the interviews or not, and whether they’re on the ballot or running as write-ins.

“I think most people find election season a bit overwhelming,” said EL CENTRAL Digital Content Manager Michael D. Gutierrez, who filmed and edited all videos for the project. “So when the opportunity arose to work with CitizenDetroit to create a stronger connection between candidates and voters, one that’s not so buttoned-up, it seemed like a great way to bridge that gap.”

CitizenDetroit CEO Sheila Cockrel and Chief Administrative Officer Kelly Larson led the organizing and production of the project. The interviews were conducted by Cockrel along with CitizenDetroit volunteers Arabia Simeon of Politics on the Go, and hip-hop artist/cultural organizer Dominique Campbell.

Each video runs three minutes or less and follows a two-part format designed to help voters see both the serious and personable sides of each candidate. In part one, candidates answered one of three questions written specifically for their race, which were designed around hot-button issues such as the use of facial recognition technology, and whether to trust the community’s word over that of the police, or vice-versa.

Part two takes a lighter approach with fun Detroit-themed questions, because whether you’re team Lafayette or American Coney Island, team Vernors or Faygo, or whether you think “Detroit Hustles Harder” or it’s “Detroit Versus Everybody,” a candidate’s choice says something about who they are as a Detroiter.

The videos are available now across multiple platforms. Spanish-speaking voters can watch the mayoral and District 6 candidate videos on @elcentralmedia on Instagram and EL CENTRAL Hispanic News on Facebook. All candidate videos in English with subtitles are available on @citizendetroit on Instagram, CitizenDetroit7575 on YouTube, and CitizenDetroit on Facebook.
