MANA de Metro Detroit held its Annual Brindis Luncheon last Thursday, July 13 at Lincoln Manor in Lincoln Park. This event serves multiple purposes, as a fundraiser to support MANA’s Scholarship Program as well as the Hermanitas and Tias Mentorship Programs and the Hermanas Program. The Brindis Luncheon is also an opportunity for MANA to publicly recognize outstanding individuals in the community.

MANA’s Scholarship Program was established in 1996 and has been providing scholarships to Latina students on an annual basis. As of 2023, MANA has awarded over $158,000 in scholarships to 138 deserving Latinas. This year, MANA expanded their scholarship categories to include the Ellen Ochoa STEM Scholarship to go along with the Monica L. The Brindis Luncheon also recognized Latinas whose spirit, courage and perseverance demonstrate their commitment to our community. This year, we honored three exceptional Latinas for their hard work and commitment to improving the lives of Latinx in Metro Detroit. MANA’s 2023 Adelita Award recipients are Estrella (Star) Crawford, Dr. Vanessa Reynolds, and Gabriela Santiago-Romero. In addition, MANA’s “Amigo of the Year” Award went to Raymond Lozano for his continued advocacy work on behalf of the Latino community. Ray has also been a strong supporter of MANA since its inception. All the award recipients gave a heart-felt tribute to their own Adelitas, Tias and Abuelas as well as all the mentors who supported their career goals along the way. Dr. Vanessa Reynolds urged the scholarship recipients to utilize every college resource at their disposal and to stay connected to their MANA Tia/Mentor.

The Brindis Luncheon Keynote Speaker was the Honorable Mary Cavanagh, Michigan State Senate. Senator Cavanagh is the youngest Hispanic woman to serve in the Senate and she paid tribute to Belda Garza (former State Representative) for paving the way in the Michigan Legislature. Senator Cavanagh’s speech addressed what it was like for her growing up and feeling she had to hide her identity for fear of being different to embracing her roots and being proud of her heritage. The Senator concluded by urging the audience to speak up and become active participants in the political process as the Latino community deserves to have their voices heard.

MANA wishes to thank all the sponsors, vendors, and all the volunteers that planned, coordinated, worked and presented at the Brindis Luncheon. A big shout-out to all the award and scholarship recipients who made the occasion, a memorable event. If you feel inspired to join MANA de Metro Detroit or want to support the organization in any way, please go to our website at www.manademetrodetroit.com for more information.
