Mexico Sweeps January Games

Javier Aguirre and Mexico came through two low-key friendly games unscathed with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Panama and Bolivia. Against a resilient Panamanian team, the World Cup co-hosts had to wait until stoppage time at the end before defender Richard Peralta scored an own goal. German Berterame scored the winner against Bolivia midway through the second half.

While the results and perhaps even the performances don’t cry out “World Cup contender”, Aguirre had a chance to work with his domestic based players and add in a couple of new dual nationals. For some time, it was the United States national team that benefited from Mexican-Americans who were good players, but not good enough to play for Mexico. Against Panama, Aguirre started three dual nationals who had little hope of being part of the US national team.

Richard Ledezma, Brian Gutierrez, and Obed Vargas all played for the US at the youth level. None looked to be contenders for the top national team though. All three have played in MLS, coming through academies to play in the domestic top league. Ledezma had an injury-hit stint in the Netherlands for PSV Eindhoven but eventually could not establish himself as a full-time starter there. He even struggled at New York City FC. He has now joined Chivas.

Gutierrez showed plenty of promise with the Chicago Fire but could never make inroads at the international level. He was cut from the US Olympic team for the Paris games and that most likely triggered his move south and change of eligibility. He joined Ledezma at Chivas as another dual national, Cade Cowell, left Guadalajara for New York City.

Obed Vargas is slightly different. He’s a holding midfielder, born in Alaska, who plays for the Seattle Sounders in MLS and has established himself as a solid starter in the league. His competition in the US national team is Tyler Adams, Tanner Tessman, Aidan Morris, and even club teammate Christian Roldan, among others. Vargas saw this two years ago and made the change to his parents’ homeland.

Against Panama, Vargas and Gutierrez came off before the hour mark and Ledezma played the whole game. Only Gutierrez made an appearance in the second game against Bolivia.

Looking ahead to the summer, an equally interesting appearance came from Monterrey striker German Berterame, who scored the winner against Bolivia as a second half substitute. Berterame has been the subject of a transfer bid from Inter Miami. Who wouldn’t want to play with Lionel Messi? As far as Mexico is concerned though, the national team needs a successor to Raul Jiminez. He will be 35 years old at the World Cup. While he starts regularly for Fulham in the Premier League and shows great commitment, he is still 35 and needs a replacement at the club and international level.

During the two friendly wins, Berterame shared the striker spot with Armando Gonzalez of Chivas. Berterame’s goal against Bolivia perhaps gives him a leg up on the back-up striker position, but there will be more opportunities in the next few months. Mexico will play another non-FIFA window game against Iceland in February before bringing in the first choice squad for the March international window games against Portugal and Belgium.

Those March games will also test Mexico’s defense a bit more that the mostly defensive sides they have scheduled so far. Mexico dominated against Panama with 72% possession and 10 corner kicks. However, they only forced 3 saves by JD Gunn in the Panamanian goal. The trip to Bolivia produced a more even contest. Carlos Lampe had to make 4 saves against the Bolivians in a match where the statistics looked more balanced. Overall, Aguirre will be feeling positive about the two-match camp. The team had two positive results and he has a better picture of all the candidates in his pool ahead of the World C

Incluso tuvo dificultades en New York City FC.
