Michigan’s Filmmakers to Connect at Annual MiFIA Holiday Party

Detroit’s film industry will gather next Thursday, December 11, for the Michigan Film Industry Association’s (MiFIA) annual year-end free networking event at The Scarab Club from 6:30pm to 10pm. The drop-in event requires no registration, and all who are interested in or working in the entertainment industries are encouraged to attend.

The event comes as Michigan’s creative sector pushes for the Multimedia Jobs Act, bipartisan legislation first introduced in July 2023 by Reps. John Roth (R-Interlochen) and Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield). The bill would establish a transferable tax credit for Michigan-produced films, television, digital media, music, and video games, matching incentive programs already offered by more than 40 other states. “With the state budget now passed,” said Alexander Page, MiFIA Legislative Action Committee Chair, “and attention shifting to policy, we are optimistic about starting 2026 with strong progress.” Page added that the event helps unite Michigan’s creative community while maintaining momentum behind the Multimedia Jobs Act.

Josh Mackey, MiFIA Marketing Committee member and co-founder of Campfire Film Cooperative, has been hosting monthly film events at The Scarab Club every third Thursday. Campfire’s mission is “to bring filmmakers, artists, musicians, and storytellers together” through mixers, screenings, and networking that “spark new collaborations across disciplines,” which he’s hoping shapes the MiFIA year-end gathering.

The Scarab Club has been a gathering place for artists since 1907. Located at 217 Farnsworth Street across from the Detroit Film Theatre, the venue’s upstairs lounge displays ceiling beams signed by the likes of Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp, Nora Chapa Mendoza and Norman Rockwell.

The event is coordinated by Mackey, Clare Cooney (Manager of Farmington Civic Theater), Alexander Page, and Megan Maczko.
