The Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit and its volunteers organized a weekend full of traditional festivities to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the theme “La Historia de Southwest Detroit”. The weekend kicked off with the two-day Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at 21st and Bagley in Mexicantown on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Fiesta featured artisan vendors, food vendors, information tables for community resources and services, and of course, dancing with local entertainers on our stage. Well-known Grupo Nueva Herencia performed on Saturday evening and Mauro Cruz y Los Invitados entertained on Sunday evening. Plus, the Fiesta hosted a wrestling match on Sunday after the parade for wrestling fans, especially the kids.

The traditional centerpiece of the celebrations was the parade down the W Vernor commercial corridor hosting thousands of spectators along the 3-mile procession and dozens of parade floats, decorated cars, and walking groups in full costume.

Grand Marshall Ozzie Rivera signals to a friend watching the parade

This year’s Grand Marshall Honoree was Ozzie Rivera, retired social worker and cultural activist and musician. Rivera currently teaches Afro Latino History and Culture at Wayne State University and social work at the University of Michigan. Rivera also contributes a frequent column to EL CENTRAL called Recuerdos y Pensamientos.

Parade participants were joined in the procession by Deroit Mayor Mike Duggan, City Council Members Gabriela Santiago-Romero and Mary Waters, the Miss Mexico Pageant Queen Daniela Diaz and her Court of Princesses.

Both events sponsored by the Mexican Patriotic Committee, the parade and Fiesta, were incident free again this year, although unrelated Cinco de Mayo celebrations resulted in actions taken by the Detroit Police to address potential problems and some businesses along the east end of W Vernor were forced to close earlier than scheduled. Event organizers will address all security and logistics issues with the City of Detroit in meetings following this year’s events to plan for even more successful celebrations next year.
