This past weekend in the Plaza del Sol the public was able to experience the first two performances of “Mucho Gusto, Nice to Meet You” by La Carpa Theatre. The concept was inspired by the traveling pop-up ‘carpa’ or tent theatres in Mexico from the early 20th century. They were known to feature a variety of improvised comedy sketches, puppet shows, acrobatics, dance and political satire. These shows became the humble start for many performers who would later find success in the Golden Age of Cinema, such as Cantinflas.

Director and Producer Karilú Alarcon Forshee brought a taste of Latin culture to us in this phenomenally, well written story of the success, trials and tribulations of some of the most beloved characters in our history. The characters range from comics and singers from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, icons from the Chicano Movement to modern-day singers and political trailblazers. It was developed in collaboration with the cast, ranging from ages 11 to 17, who brought their own experiences into the mix.

The beautiful set design was conceived by Elton Monroy Duran (Visual Arts Director/ Graphic Design) and was also created in collaboration with the cast. The various backdrops shown throughout the show give us a glimpse into the character’s backstory and the last one is a wonderful homage to our very own community. Overall, the weekend was a success with the buzz from the proud parents seeing the show for the very first time, the excitement from the cast finally showing off their hard work and talent and even local artists selling their handmade items. Throughout the night you’d catch glimpses of the talented production team and volunteers that made it a night to remember. Follow them on social media to get your complementary tickets to the upcoming shows in Beacon Park, Dequindre Cut Freight Yard and The Congregation!

The show’s producers extend special thanks to Gloria Rocha from Plaza del Sol for providing a safe space and her immense support to make this weekend possible! Liliana Blancas-Rodriguez is the Program Coordinator & Production Assistant for La Carpa Theatre.
