SER Metro-Detroit celebrated its 55th Anniversary at its Annual Amigos de SER Business Recognition Luncheon held at the MGM Grand on Friday, October 9. Recognition was also given to the 25th Anniversary of the Samaritan Center which is a part of the Unified SER (Metro) Family of organizations.  More than 500 business and community partners and program participants attended the luncheon.

Keynote speaker for the recognition luncheon this year was Joi Harris, President and CEO of DTE Energy. In her keynote address, Ms. Harris spoke about her early career development at DTE and the difference it made in her own career when people took the time to mentor her and share their knowledge with her. She noted that young people benefit from support from a variety of sources, schools, training programs, community organizations and employers.

Harris commented that SER has helped young people overcome obstacles, earn credentials, build confidence and prepare for meaningful careers. Offering opportunities to a young person can change a life, as she has seen from her own experience.

The luncheon included an awards ceremony recognizing the many partners, funders, and employers who invest in the Detroit community through SER’s work. This year’s “Amigo of the Year Award” was presented to DTE for their ongoing partnership and support of SER Metro’s programs for the past 30 plus years. Aztec Manufacturing received the “Employer of the Year Award” for hiring more than 200 SER graduates and program participants during the past year.

The “Journey to Success” awards were presented to program graduates Joshua Arline, Ulises Alvarado, Katelyn Cremeans and Freddy Hardwick. Two additional graduates, Makaylia Ross and Luis Melendez each received $1,000 in honor of the “Frank D. Stella Scholarship Program”.

Eva Garza Dewaelsche, President and CEO of SER Metro-Detroit thanked Keynote Speaker Joi Harris, the event sponsors, and SER staff for their contributions to the successful event. We are grateful for their support of our mission of:  Advancing People, Growing Businesses, and Strengthening Communities through Education, Employment and Economic Development.”

Special recognition was also given during the program to long-time SER Board member and supporter Frank C. Casillias who passed away this past spring at the age of 100. A resident of Chicago IL, Casillas served on various SER-affiliated boards for 35 years. He was born in Michoacan, Mexico, immigrated to the U.S. with his family as a child, and served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as an engineer with Standard Oil and General Electric and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1985 as Assistant Secretary of Labor. “His impact was felt not only in the boardrooms but also in the lives of those he helped through his dedication to service, mentorship, and above all, family,” said Garza Dewaelsche.
